This position is part of the Northwest Region Public Health Division within the NMDOH. The Public Health Department provides safety net services to the most vulnerable clients within the community, based on set program area processes and protocols in the areas of Infectious Disease investigation and management, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, TB management, Family Planning, adult and child immunizations, Harm Reduction and MOUD services.

Why does the job exist?

'This position promotes public health and participates in the role of building healthier communities in New Mexico thru collaboration with clinicians in the Northwest Region and the State Epidemiology Office and the TB program to investigate and take action to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the Region's communities.

How does it get done?

1. Respond to disease outbreaks and Epidemiology situations. Activities include: monitoring and prioritizing cases, conducting case interviews, entering case information into a database, collecting specimens with potential for exposure to communicable diseases (with use of personal protective equipment), providing isolation guidelines and health education, and identifying contacts and coordinating preventive treatment.
2. Collaborate with community partners (e.g. schools, nursing homes, correctional facilities). Activities include: coordinating specimen collection, providing education to control spread of disease within the facility, and coordinating immunization outreach events.
3. Conducting other public health clinic activities, including: TB investigations, administering TB medications and providing vaccines in clinical and outreach settings.

Minimum Qualification

Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico OR eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements OR Eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is primary performed in a public health office clinic but on occasion work is performed within a client's home and at auxiliary or community sites with potential for exposure to communicable diseases (with use of personal protective equipment). Work is performed in an office with computer usage and exposure to visual display terminals, standing, walking, bending and lifting up to 50 lbs required. Services are provided in a clinic with diverse racial and ethnic populations many of who do not speak the English language. Occasional in-state travel may be required.
