As an Equipment Engineer at Tesla, you will play a crucial role in developing and enhancing equipment for our advanced Drive Unit manufacturing processes. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to building a world-class manufacturing facility from the ground up in a fast-paced and demanding environment. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Quality, and Process teams, to take new products from initial design through prototype development to full production. Your work will involve optimizing equipment and processes, ensuring safety, and driving continuous improvements in a critical subsystem of innovative products. The successful Equipment Engineer candidate will gain broad-based manufactturing experience, encompassing Electrical/PLC, Robotics, Mechanical, Machining, Welding, Hydraulics/Pneumatics, Conveyor systems, and improving. Must be willing to tackle whatever technical challenge presents itself and be willing to assist and learn from others in their areas of expertise

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose equipment failures, finds root causes, and communicate actions taken and become an expert level trainer on all machines in assigned areas and be responsible for up leveling Shift Technicians
  • Design, fabricate, install, and modify equipment improvements, including managing bidding and quoting processes
  • Design new tooling, fixtures, assembly aids, and equipment to enhance processes and yield. Conceptualize high-volume production equipment, prioritizing safety, cost, capacity, volumetric efficiency, and delivery time
  • Identify automation opportunities and collaborate with Automation/Control Engineers for design and implementation
  • Optimize production equipment to maximize safety and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), driving world-class quality levels. Lead continuous improvement projects to increase yield, capacity, and capability
  • Manage continuous improvement projects to drive equipment performance based on metrics such as OEE, Availability, MTTR, and MTBF
  • Utilize CAD modeling and FEA structural analysis for new tooling/equipment, defining specifications and requirements


Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent 4+ years of Engineering experience
  • Understanding of automation control systems PLC/HMI/SCADA/ Robots (preferably Siemens with TIA portal and Ignition) and interfaces with software and factory databases. Beckhoff also desired but not required
  • Knowledge of relevant manufacturing processes, engineering materials, and fastening methods
  • Strong mechanical design and analysis skills, including pneumatics, sensors, motors, pumps, and actuators
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with 3D CAD design and analysis; SolidWorks required, CATIA a plus, experience with electrical design and EPLAN
