Under general supervision, the Equipment Operator I and Equipment Operator II perform general unskilled and skilled labor involving the maintenance and construction of highways, bridges, and related facilities.

Casual call employee could be called to be part of the Highway snow removal, paving, construction, or maintenance crews, at the discretion of the supervisor. Position will require candidate to be available at all hours of the day, including weekends, holidays and extended hours. The candidate will also be required to successfully pass a drug and alcohol testing. The following duties are most critical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Operates equipment such as dump trucks, sweepers, tow motors, tractors/mowers, trailers, loaders, rollers, etc.
  • Performs hand work, shovels, erects and removes snow fences, etc. Picks up litter and debris; works independently or with a work crew.
  • Maintains, cleans, and washes equipment, vehicles, and facilities.
  • Services; changes oil, grease, and fuel; and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, works with the mechanics as necessary.
  • Completes and submits records of time, location, materials, and equipment used on each project.
  • Follows safety rules and guidelines as established by, but not limited to County and/or state/federal law.
  • Plows snow from highways, applying chlorides and abrasives as necessary.
  • Maintains grounds adjacent to highway facilities, planting and cutting grass, laying sod, etc.
  • Operates a variety of equipment to fill cracks, patch holes, cut brush, etc.
  • Graduate from high school or G.E.D. and valid Commercial Driver's License with endorsements: A, B, C, D, N required.
  • For Equipment Operator I, experience in the operation of light duty equipment desired.
  • For Equipment Operator II, 1 year successful experience as an Equipment Operator I.
  • Or, any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate and service trucks, tractors, and light equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, and cope with distracting vibrations, fumes, dust, etc.
  • Ability to organize and maintain accurate and complete records, and prepare clear and comprehensive reports
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with appropriate safety regulations.
  • Ability to work semi-independently making sound decisions using good judgment.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with co-workers, county officials and officers, general public, etc.
  • Ability to budget time and schedule work to efficiently complete tasks.
  • Ability to organize and schedule work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stoop, lift, carry; push, pull, and otherwise move objects up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
