Job Duties

The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of State Police is seeking an Equipment Repair Technician Trainee for an entry-level position working in the Installation Facility. The Equipment Repair Technician Trainee will be working in an exciting, fast paced, family diverse, team-oriented atmosphere where attention to detail is key. The Equipment Repair Technician Trainee will primarily learn how to install, remove, and repair police, communications, and other electronic equipment in Virginia State Police vehicles as well as vehicles for 21 other Agencies. This is where attention to detail counts! Expectations include strong skills with, or the ability to learn how to diagnose, repair and service motor vehicles; the ability to learn to safely use shop, woodworking and mechanics hand tools; the ability to learn to read and comprehend automotive and equipment manuals, schematic diagrams, and other related written documents; the ability to process and report information through logs, work orders and laptop computers; and assist with shuffling vehicles, and keeping facility and Department vehicles clean and orderly. Adherence to all safety measures and shop equipment is paramount.

•Learns to diagnose, repair and service a variety of vehicles.
•Learns to calibrate speedometers.
•Learns how to interpret and follow manufacturer's procedures and schematic diagrams to repair and install equipment.
•Learns to remove equipment from surplus vehicles.
•Learns to repair and refurbish police, communications, and other electronic equipment for installation in other vehicles.
•Learns how to equip new vehicles by installing police, communications, and other electronic equipment.
•Learns to assist with shuffling vehicles, running errands, keeping facility clean and orderly.
•Learns to operate a rollback carrier and how to properly tow disabled and wrecked vehicles.
•Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

•Familiarity with or ability to learn equipment decommission and installation procedures and techniques associated with police, communications, and other electronic equipment. •Safely use shop, woodworking, and mechanics hand tools.
•Have the ability to learn to operate a rollback type car carrier.
•Have the ability to learn to read and comprehend automotive and equipment manuals, schematic diagrams, and other related written documents.
•Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, paying close attention to detail, and communicating effectively in English with Agency personnel.
•Skilled in the use of computers and basic software programs (Outlook, Word).
•Graduation from high school or equivalent.
•Virginia Operator's License required.

Additional Considerations

•Completion of or participation in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school program preferred.
•Some experience in the Electrical/Electronic/Automotive vocation preferred.
