Job Duties

•Candidates with prior equipment repair training and experience may be hired as an Equipment Repair Technician (Equipment Services Repair Technician 1 - pay - band 3), and the salary offered will be commensurate with experience.

•Candidates with limited experience are hired as a Equipment Repair Technician Trainee (Equipment Services Repair Technician I - pay - band 3, $38,612). After satisfactory completion of a 12-month full-time Equipment Repair Technician Trainee Training Program. This training period may be extended, and the total training period cannot exceed 18-months. Employees who successfully pass the Training Program will progress to an Equipment Repair Technician (Equipment Services Repair Technician 1 - pay - band 3) and will receive a 10% salary increase.

•Experienced candidates who are not placed in a trainee status are not eligible for the 10% salary increase.

The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of State Police is seeking an Equipment Repair Technician Trainee for an entry-level position working in the Installation Facility. The Equipment Repair Technician Trainee will be working in an exciting, fast paced, family diverse, team-oriented atmosphere where attention to detail is key. The Equipment Repair Technician Trainee will primarily learn how to install, remove, and repair police, communications, and other electronic equipment in Virginia State Police vehicles as well as vehicles for 21 other Agencies. This is where attention to detail counts! Expectations include strong skills with, or the ability to learn how to diagnose, repair and service motor vehicles; the ability to learn to safely use shop, woodworking and mechanics hand tools; the ability to learn to read and comprehend automotive and equipment manuals, schematic diagrams, and other related written documents; the ability to process and report information through logs, work orders and laptop computers; assist with shuffling vehicles, and keeping facility and Department vehicles clean and orderly. •Learns to diagnose, repair and service a variety of vehicles.
•Learns to calibrate speedometers and remove components from wrecked vehicles.
•Learns how to interpret and follow manufacturer's procedures and schematic diagrams to repair and install equipment.
•Learns to remove equipment from surplus vehicles.
•Learns to repair and refurbish police, communications, and other electronic equipment for installation in other vehicles.
•Learns to operate a rollback carrier and how to properly tow disabled and wrecked vehicles.
•Learns how to equip new vehicles by installing police, communications, and other electronic equipment.
•Learns to assist with shuffling vehicles, running errands, keeping facility clean and orderly.
•Works independently and as a member of a team.

Minimum Qualifications

•Familiarity with or ability to learn equipment installation procedures and techniques associated with police, communications, and other electronic equipment.
•Must have knowledge and skills with, or the ability to learn how to diagnose, repair and service motor vehicles.
•Must be able to learn to safely use shop, woodworking, and mechanics hand tools.
•Must have the ability to learn to operate a rollback type car carrier.
•Must be able to learn to read and comprehend automotive and equipment manuals, schematic diagrams, and other related written documents.
•Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team, paying close attention to detail, and communicating effectively in English with Agency personnel.
•Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
•Valid driver's license required.
•Must be able to work overtime as needed.

Additional Considerations

•Some mechanical or automotive repair experience preferred.
•Some experience reading and comprehending automotive or mechanical installation/repair manuals preferred.
