Masters degree in an appropriate discipline closely related to youth/human development, recreation, or education.

Position Summary

This Public Service Faculty position is primarily responsible for the coordination and implementation of the 4-H summer camping program delivered at all five 4-H residential centers (Wahsega 4-H Center, Fortson 4-H Center, Rock Eagle 4-H Center, Burton 4-H Center, and Georgia 4-H at Camp Jekyll). This includes, but is not limited to, coordinating the content and curriculum, establishing the sessions offered, preparing schedules and fee structures, coordinating and disseminating marketing/promotion materials, managing communication about registration/payments/details, providing trainings for county Extension professionals, recruiting/hiring/supervising counselors, and managing compliance of UGA and 4-H policies and procedures. This role also supports other aspects of the total Georgia 4-H program as a member of the State 4-H Staff.

A valid driver's license and a vehicle for official duty travel are required. The position includes frequent work on evenings and weekends, especially in the summer months.

Additional Requirements

Achievement of the rank of Public Service Assistant (or equivalent) or have a documented record of achievement that qualifies the candidate for placement in the public service faculty track.

The Extension 4-H Specialist for Camping will be expected to be located and present at Rock Eagle 4-H Center for the summer months while camp is occurring.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

Three or more years of experience working in the field of positive youth development/education/camping with an understanding of positive youth development theory and frameworks.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Demonstrated expertise in education, youth development, camping, Extension, or related area.
  • Appreciation and understanding of Extension and 4-H programs including camp are preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in program development and evaluation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills are required, with the ability to work with various colleagues and audiences.
  • Work independently and in teams.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.


Physical Demands
  • Walking long distances or standing for extended periods of time for 4-H events
  • Loading vehicles for 4-H events which includes lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing, and pulling heavy items/boxes up to 40 lbs.

Duties/Responsibilities

Provides vision, direction, coordination, and overall leadership to the 4-H camping program. Ensure that the camping program is in alignment with positive youth development principles. This includes working with appropriate faculty and staff to develop the curriculum. This also includes serving as liaison with a variety of faculty/staff including 4-H center staff, 4-H Program Development Coordinators, County Extension professionals and volunteers, counselors, state 4-H faculty and staff, and alumni and stakeholder groups. Engages in scholarship as a public service faculty member and contributes to the body of knowledge for the field of positive youth development and camping.

Provides materials, resources, and communications to county extension offices and 4-H centers as it relates to the 4-H camping program including marketing and promotion materials, educational materials about the camping program, information to help county offices prepare to be successful at camp such as timelines, fees, checklists, and more.

Provide leadership for planning teams for specialty camping programs including Junior Camp, Senior Camps, Marine Resources Camps, Wilderness Challenge Camps, and others as determined. Provide leadership for securing grants and private donations to expand resources and scholarships and serve as liaison with related professional organizations and camping programs and represent the University of Georgia and Georgia 4-H with partners.
