Job Duties

Norfolk State University Nursing department has an immediate opening for a full time 12 clinical faculty, non-tenured position. The clinical faculty member may teach some course but the primary responsibility/assignments include clinical supervision and or clinical instruction. Additionally, the teaching assignments may vary depending upon the need of the Nursing Program.
Clinical supervision assignments will include both acute care and community health clinical experiences. Depending on course credit hours, the clinical faculty will supervise 2-3.

The Clinical Faculty position:
• Facilitate students in the development of clinical skills, critical thinking clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment.
• Perform summative evaluation for outcomes and competencies required of the pre-licensure nursing student
• Monitor students utilizing established Critical Behavior Tools
• Document clinical skills, critical thinking clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment.
• Plans and delivers nursing instruction to facilitate student learning.
• Develop and plan meaning and relevant activities in the clinical and classroom environment
• Apply best practices to facilitate teaching and learning processes and principles in an institutional setting committed to continuous quality improvement.
• Evaluating, developing and maintaining curriculum and instructional materials.
• Assessing and evaluating student progress toward attaining the learning outcomes established for the courses and program.
• Documenting student leaning, interpreting outcomes, and recording grades.
• Providing academic assistance and advisement to students.
• Assisting with student recruitment, admission and retention.
• Maintaining accurate and appropriate student, instructor, course and clinical program documentation.
• Creating and maintaining effective collegial relationships with students, faculty, University and clinical agency staff and administration.
• Modeling professional evidence-based nursing that is sensitive to diverse and multicultural considerations.
• Establish and maintain professional and ethical boundaries with students, co-workers, and others in all learning environment.
• Participates in University service and events.
• Perform other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Earned doctorate (DNP, DNS, PhD, etc) with specialization in nursing, from a regionally accredited college or university.
2. A current, unencumbered license as a registered nurse or multistate licensure privilege to practice nursing in Virginia.
3. Evidence of current experience in nursing practice (minimum of five years) and teaching sufficient to demonstrate professional competence.
4. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the following nursing disciplines: fundamentals; community health; women's health; pediatric, medical/surgical, or mental health; or a combination thereof.
5. Evidence of continuing professional education and a commitment to lifelong learning.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
7. Ability to effectively engage with students and ensure excellence in instruction.
8. Ability to identify and apply assessment tools and/or methods to determine if learning outcomes are achieved.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Post-secondary teaching experience
2. Experience teaching clinical environment and virtual simulation learning platform.
3. Experience in medical/surgical nursing, mental health, pediatric or women's health or combination thereof.
4. Proficiency with computer applications for instructional purposes and clinical documentation.
5. Knowledge of higher education accreditation.
