Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Facilities and Grounds Director is responsible for staff and resources needed to maintain property, facilities and grounds to ensure member safety and satisfaction at the Morris Hospital YMCA facility. This position directs the maintenance, custodial and improvement operations of the YMCA facility, grounds and vehicles, including preventative maintenance and related budgets. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in facility management or a related field preferred and/or years of experience equivalent.
  • Three or more years experience in facility management or closely related field.
  • Working knowledge of custodial, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, fire prevention, and plumbing systems, carpentry, and other maintenance-related areas.
  • Skills in supervision, budget management and project management.
  • Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, BBP, First Aid and AED certifications required within 30 days of employment.
  • Certified Pool Operator(CPO) and boiler certifications required within 120 days of employment.
  • Ability and current license to drive with record that meets YMCA standards.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Familiarity with personal computers helpful.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.

  • Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out essential duties.
  • Ability to erect and stand on ladders and platforms at heights up to 30 feet.
  • Ability to work with paint, cleaning equipment, chemical compounds, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray, and aerosol forms.
  • Ability to paint, clean equipment, and operate motorized equipment as needed.
  • Ability to work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
  • Ability to perform essential maintenance to facility or equipment which may involve, but not limited to the following activities: semi - reaching to full-reach overhead; crouching; kneeling; shoveling; carrying, working in narrow and/or confining spaces: underground, overhead, and at ground level; twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs; and lying on stomach and/or back, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear and have visual acuity.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors, will be exposed to prevalent weather conditions. May be require travel to various locations.


Essential Functions

  • Provides overall coordination of facility maintenance, including planning and developing preventative maintenance.
  • Ensures the proper operation of all mechanical systems.
  • Completes repair work and projects in a timely manner. May include performing technical construction projects such as carpentry, light electrical, light plumbing and grounds work .
  • Oversees all contractors that work in the facility and on the grounds. May request and review bids, and recommend selection of contractors.
  • Works with outside agencies such as fire, health, building depts., etc. to ensure compliance with all local, state and federal regulations related to facilities and grounds.
  • In conjunction with Executive Director, assist with developing budget supporting the preventative and annual maintenance plans and monitor expenditures against budget.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs assigned staff and volunteers. Reviews and evaluates performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Maintains regular, clear and concise communication within area of responsibility and assists custodial staff as necessary.
  • Ensures custodial staff are trained in all aspects of their positions with highest priority to safety and workplace OSHA standards.
  • Collaborates with departmental branch leadership staff to accomplish branch and association initiatives and provide support for seasonal operations, program transitions and special events as needed.
  • Participates with other members of management in the YMCA’s fundraising campaign.
  • Responsible for making knowledgeable and informed purchasing decisions relative to maintenance supplies and maintains proper inventory and operation of equipment and supplies.
  • Provides leadership and timely management of the maintenance work order system meeting the parameters established for the association including but not limited to timely completion of work. Advises management on maintenance issues and projects as requested.
  • Updates facility plans periodically. May develop annual and long-range plan of capital projects, consistent with the YMCA’s strategic plan and community needs.
  • Develops comprehensive branch custodial plan that ensures the facility is in outstanding condition during all hours of operation.
  • Participates in Facility Cabinet meetings.
  • Serves as Leader on Duty (LOD) as assigned and provides coverage as needed.
  • 24-hour on-call availability to respond to any branch emergency situations.
