These skilled positions assist in the repair and maintenance of structural and mechanical equipment and facilities associated with water supply systems, wastewater collection systems, and related infrastructure. Direction will be received from Facility Maintenance Technicians at higher classifications. Supervision is received from the Superintendent of Wastewater Treatment and Disposal.

  • Operate and maintain County owned wastewater-pumping stations; identify performance issues with pumps, motors, controls etc., and make proper repairs
  • Install and maintain facility equipment such as conveyors, grit screws, belt presses, pumps, motors, grinders, screening equipment, valves, compressors, flow meters, and associated pipe and fittings
  • Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment such as blowers, pumps, valves, air compressors, etc.
  • Install piping systems in facilities including ductile, iron pipe, pvc, copper, aluminum, galvanized and stainless steel
  • Perform cleaning and repair activities in confined and hazardous environments such as manholes, wet wells and tanks
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on high pressure jet rodding sewer cleaning equipment
  • Operate pressure cleaners and sand blasting equipment; portable engine-driven, electric and pneumatic tools (e.g. drills, saws, grinders, etc.); as well as power-driven and manual grounds maintenance equipment
  • Perform basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry duties to properly maintain sewer facilities and related infrastructure
  • Operate and maintain CDL equipment including a combination sewer cleaning and hydro-excavation truck, dump truck, and 9-ton hydraulic crane truck, as needed
  • Use a computer, smartphone, or tablet to complete work orders, maintenance checklists, order material, complete credit card reports, and submit timesheets
  • Perform other related duties as required

LLEVEL III REQUIREMENTS ($25.71 per hour)
  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of mechanical work experience in the facilities maintenance or related building construction trade
  • Possession of a valid automobile operator's license with the ability to obtain a Commercial restricted Class A driver's license and with airbrake and tank endorsement within 12 months of hire
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire the following: Certification issued by MD Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators Temporary Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Class 5A. - OR - Class 5A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
LEVEL IV REQUIREMENTS ($29.43 per hour)
  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • Minimum 7 years of mechanical work experience in the facilities maintenance or related building construction trade
  • Experience working with or maintaining centrifugal pumps, submersible pumps or related electric motors
  • Possession of a valid automobile operator's license with the ability to obtain a Commercial restricted Class A driver's license and with airbrake and tank endorsement within 12 months of hire
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire the following: Certification issued by MD Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators Temporary Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Class 5A. - OR - Class 5A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
  • Water or wastewater plant maintenance experience
  • Experience working with or maintaining centrifugal pumps, submersible pumps or related electric motors
  • Restricted A driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements or an equivalent license
  • 1 year of work experience in wastewater treatment or wastewater collection
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
  • Knowledge of construction site hazards and appropriate safety precautions
  • Effective written and spoken (English) communication skills, including the ability to accurately complete forms and reports, and the ability to understand and follow written and spoken instructions
  • Ability to understand meter readings, gauge readings and level indicators and interpret their significance
  • Ability to effectively evaluate facility priorities, schedule operating workloads and coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs, including the ability to effectively assess equipment performance and identify appropriate repair or service using Cartegraph Enterprise Asset Management software
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly walk and reach; frequently stoop, kneel, and crouch, lift up to 20 pounds; occasionally sit, climb, lift between 20 - 50 pounds and drive; and rarely crawl, lift over 50 pounds; push and pull up to and over 40 pounds and perform repetitive motions
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work near machinery and near chemicals/fumes; frequently work indoors and outdoors, walk on uneven ground, work below ground level, work in a noisy environment. potential exposure to infectious diseases, and required to use protective equipment; occasionally in cold temperatures below 32 degrees, work in a dirty and dusty environment; work in confined spaces and work at heights; and rarely work in hot temperatures above 100 degrees
  • Available for rotating on-call schedule, shift work if necessary, and for emergency situations
  • Within two years employee must satisfy proficiency level progress training requirements for the PLPR level II classification. The employee will be, otherwise, terminated from employment
  • PLPR Level II is the basic functional level an employee must attain
  • This position is designated as security-sensitive, requiring satisfactory background investigation, conducted by the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, in accordance with established Frederick County policy
  • This position is considered essential in the event of inclement weather, an emergency or other event as determined by DWSU administration
  • Satisfactory pre-employment pulmonary function and air purifying respirator fit test
EXAMINATION PROCESS (may include):

1) An evaluation of training and experience

2) One or more interviews

3) A pre-employment security sensitive background investigation conducted by the Frederick County Sheriff's Office

4) A pre-employment DOT physical examination with pulmonary function test and air purifying respirator fit test

5) A pre-employment DOT drug test including testing for marijuana
