Teaching Assistant Professor in Urban Planning & Geographic Analysis

The Urban Studies Program and the College of General Studies (CGS) at the University of Pittsburgh invite applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor to teach a 3-3 undergraduate course load beginning in the academic year 2025-26, pending budgetary approval. The position supports the Dietrich School of Arts and Science's BS in Urban Planning and Geographic Analysis degree and online initiatives at the College of General Studies. Three of the courses will be taught online, and three will be held in person. This position, which is outside the tenure stream, is for an initial two-year term and may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. Salary and benefits are competitive.

Applicants should have a strong teaching portfolio and be able to teach both introductory and upper-level courses; the field is open, but specialties in urban planning processes, community development, professional ethics, and social justice are particularly useful. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in remote, online, or distanced teaching, familiarity with learning management systems such as Canvas, and a proven ability to interact effectively with diverse undergraduate student audiences, including nontraditional and adult students. The ideal candidate's teaching, mentorship, and service will contribute diverse perspectives and experiences to the department, CGS, and university initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:
• PhD in urban planning or a related field.
• At least one year's experience teaching urban planning & geographic analysis at the college level.
• Demonstrated capacity to teach Planning Process and Smart Cities courses.

Preferred Requirements:
• PhD in Planning.
• Experience as an instructor of record for courses in the planning process, professional ethics, and social justice.
• Experience with remote, online, or distanced teaching and online course development.
• Investment in innovative pedagogical practices.
• Experience working with and/or commitment to non-traditional students and their needs.

Teaching Assistant Professor Duties:
• Teach three online and three in-person courses per year, determined in consultation with the department and CGS.
• Meet with students to provide support for their learning and mentoring appropriate to their educational needs.
• Contribute to departmental and CGS initiatives, including outreach to the local professional planning community.

Teaching Portfolio (12 pages max), which includes a statement of teaching philosophy and/or pedagogical practices in both in-person and online teaching, evidence of teaching effectiveness, such as student evaluations and/or model assignments for an online classroom and an abbreviated syllabus which outlines a course description, learning goals, assessment strategies, and a sample module.
