Disease Control - Northwest, ND - Epidemiologist

Join a team of disease investigators working to understand the source and spread of infectious diseases among people in North Dakota. The North Dakota Department of Health & Human Services - Field Services Division is seeking a primary investigative Epidemiologist to join their team in serving the Northwest area of North Dakota. The Epidemiologist will be regionally located within this respective region.

This position is classified as temporary but is considered long-term temporary and is expected to be an ongoing position at least through December 31, 2025. Temporary employees who work more than 30 hours per week are eligible for discounted employee paid health insurance, employee paid retirement, and employee life insurance, but not other state benefits. After one year of service, we offer 100% paid health insurance.

As an Epidemiologist, you will be the "boots on the ground" working with citizens of ND on reportable conditions and how to avoid recurrence so they may better their own health as well as the health of those around them.

Each day, you will work alongside division directors, program managers, and the state epidemiologist to conduct surveillance and education on reportable diseases, conditions, and cluster events of public health significance. You will serve as a liaison to the HHS on tribal health needs and concerns. You will engage community organizations and local partners to provide education and advice to ND citizens and tribal communities on reportable conditions, as well as work with a team of disease investigators to determine the source and spread of infectious diseases so that they may better their own health and the health of others. You will prepare and present public education programs on a variety of diseases to individuals as well as groups. You will also work with state and regional bioterrorism and emergency preparedness and response. Occasional overnight travel will be required.

To thrive in this position, you should have a strong connection to the community and be able to take initiative and action with limited supervision. You will be comfortable presenting and communicating to individuals and groups of individuals regarding sensitive topics in various settings including schools and community groups. You should have a strong respect for confidentiality and privacy and be passionate about educating and providing referrals to other resources.

To be considered, you will be required to have a bachelor's degree in public/community health, social work, a biological science, physical science, nursing, or medical technology AND one year of relevant experience. A master's degree in public health (MPH, MSPH) can be substituted for the one year of experience. Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office programs are required.

You must have a valid driver's license or can travel from one location to another within the state on your own. Enrollment in one of North Dakota's five federally recognized Tribes is a plus.

Location: HHS utilizes a blended workplace model. This position will be located within their respective region (NW) or in or around the Williston area in North Dakota.
