Note: This position supervises staff throughout the Southwest and Southeast Regions supporting the installation and maintenance of the Wisconsin State Patrol's 24/7 public safety communications equipment, assigned fleet, and tower infrastructure projects in the assigned Regions. This position may be required to travel frequently throughout the state to respond to maintenance/emergencies and provide supervision.

Position Summary

The Field Service Technician Supervisor manages the operation, maintenance, repair, and development of a large portion of a very complex communication network, integrating and coordinating its operation with the total statewide communications network which includes WANs, LANs, fiber optic networks, analog and digital microwave networks, and two-way radio networks. These networks provide various voice and data services to public safety agencies including law enforcement, emergency management, fire departments, emergency medical services, corrections and highway maintenance, etc.

This position also performs supervisory work relating to complex design, development, modification, construction, system interface, installation, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of complex microprocessor and computer-based electronic communications (microwave, two-way radio and private telephone), police emergency equipment, alarm systems, control systems, emergency power generation systems, and uninterruptable power sources.

Other responsibilities include:
  • Training staff in technical and operational matters relating to regional networks.
  • Leading and overseeing tower infrastructure projects.
  • Supervising the design, planning, coordination, and implementation of complex electronic systems, communication systems, and network systems.
  • Developing work priorities and goals for staff.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (81-03) with an annual salary of $68,640-$92,206, plus excellent benefits. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

Successful applicants must have the ability to drive a state issued vehicle and independently respond to emergencies and routine maintenance along with supporting communications systems located in remote locations 24/7/365. This will include responding to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and working alone at night in remote locations.

Employees will be assigned a state-owned full-size sport utility vehicle or truck that may be kept at their home location (up to 45 miles from headquarters). Applicants must be able to independently drive a personally-assigned state vehicle and move state owned vehicles into and out of maintenance bays on a regular basis.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants must have all the following:
  • Training or experience with communication networks including technology such as 2-way radio, microwave radio, WAN/LAN, or fiber optic networks.
  • Experience with project management or oversight of a large or complex communications network.
  • Formal or informal leadership experience (i.e. lead-worker, project lead, supervisor, etc.)
In addition to the above, well-qualified applicants must have one or more of the following:
  • Experience leading two or more technical teams across a diverse geographic area.
    • Technical Teams may include Field Service Technician or related positions that travel to provide network/radio frequency/infrastructure or comparable support in the field.
  • Experience with operating, maintaining, and servicing communications tower infrastructure, including working with tower shelters, emergency power generators, tower HVAC systems, tower alarm monitoring systems, etc.
  • Experience collaborating with public safety partners at the local, county, state, and/or federal level.
    • Public Safety Partners may include law enforcement, emergency management, fire departments, emergency medical services (EMS), public health, military, etc.
