Finance Generalists are hybrid positions, responsible for a variety of professional level work across various financial disciplines. They possess a solid financial background, either gained through work experience or education, which allows them to assume a wide range of duties across multiple areas, including accounting, budget, payroll, financial aid, financial analysis, purchasing, or treasury. Finance Generalists work on behalf of a program, function, or department, independently executing a range of financial responsibilities, based on the organization's needs.

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering within the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for a Finance Generalist.

Responsibilities:

The Finance Generalist has responsibilities that are supportive of the Senior Finance Generalist and involve working closely with this role. Finance Generalist responsibilities include the following, including, not limited to:
  • Coordinate purchases, ensuring that bills are paid promptly and in compliance with University requirements and resolve any discrepancies as needed.
  • Enter payroll costing allocations and adjustments.
  • Track fund accounts, special projects, or tasks to ensure appropriate entries are made and monitor the account balances.
  • Prepare account reconciliations following all financial and auditing procedures within the mandated timeframe. Verify that data entry, coding, and documentation are correct for each transaction.
  • Monitor suspense accounts each month, and act as needed
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting
  • 2 years of experience in a related field required. Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience using UBI and Workday
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to recognize when a problem should be escalated within the team.
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) experience with preference given to applicants with at least Intermediate-level skills in Excel.
  • Experience interpreting and applying UVA and Commonwealth of Virginia policies and procedures, specifically those related to purchasing and reimbursements
  • Experience managing change in a unit/department
  • Creating managerial reports and presenting to leadership
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
Anticipated Hiring Range: $55,000-$70,000 commensurate with education and experience.
