Job Description:

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

This position will provide financial aid services by educating and advising students, parents, faculty, and the general public on the financial aid processes related to federal, state, and local financial aid options. Determine initial eligibility in all areas (grants, loans, scholarships, work-study, etc.) for financial aid students. Manage the campus financial aid work study program with strategies to expeditiously process student work applications to meet the employment needs of student applicants and campus employers. Conduct various on/off-campus financial aid-related workshops, facilitate presentations and informational sessions and participate in campus orientation and other scheduled events.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply college policies and procedures, especially as they relate to student financial aid
  • Ability to comply with federal, state, and institutional policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of federal and state educational financial aid programs; ability to interpret student financial aid reports and other verification documents
  • Knowledge of Federal and State financial aid regulations
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Ability to develop, collect, analyze, and interpret statistical and other related financial aid data and reports to manage student accounts, and communicate the information to students, parents, faculty, staff, etc.
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution methods and skilled with mediating and resolving conflicts related to student financial aid
  • Ability to develop effective systems to process and manage the work-study program
  • Demonstrated understanding of and skilled with navigating a complex student information system and proficient with other information technology applications, such as, but not limited to the operation of a PC, email communication and MS Office software, electronic document imaging, interactive voice response systems and online service kiosks
  • Knowledge of general accounting procedures including performing reconciliation's; project management skills to meet deadlines and complete work; knowledge of effective problem solving techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively deliver oral presentations for small and large groups
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication and customer relations skills to interact with diverse populations
  • Ability to organize and demonstrated the ability to multi-task (manage multiple priorities) and perform other office-related functions
  • Ability to use a variety of software programs including configuring and interpreting databases and spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of the community college mission and the financial aid office, particularly as it relates to enrollment and support services
  • Ability to promote collaboration and work as a team member in complex processes and an intensive student-centered environment
  • Required ability to maintain harmonious working relationships
  • Superior organizational and problem resolution skills
  • Ability to work independently and interact effectively as a member of a team to work collaboratively with other departments
