Job Summary

The Biointerfaces Institute (BI) within the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to join our team as a Financial Specialist.

The Biointerfaces Institute was established in 2012 to create a new blueprint for biomedical research that encourages out-of-the-box thinking, drives innovation, accelerates the path from basic research to real-world health outcomes, while serving as an ideal training site for the next generation of scientists and thought leaders. BI is currently home to 35 research groups comprised of more than 400 students and researchers from the School of Dentistry, the College of Engineering, the School of Medicine, and the College of Pharmacy, collocated in over 56,000 square feet of dedicated, state-of-the-art facilities at the North Campus Research Complex.

The Financial Specialist will provide daily financial support for the Director and the Managing Director's research- and operational-related activities. This position requires an individual to work independently with a high degree of accuracy, professionalism, and confidentiality in a fast-paced work environment. Responsibilities require advanced technical skills using the Google suite (including calendaring, email, and G-drive) and Microsoft Office products (including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). S/he/they must be an excellent communicator (both written and verbal), an effective listener, and be willing to work on special projects within the Biointerfaces Institute.

Responsibilities*

This position will report to the BI Managing Director, and will work with the other BI staff, the BI Faculty Director, the BI student group (BIONIC), and others in the College of Engineering to perform the tasks outlined below.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare and submit financial reports concerning expenditures, forecasts, receivables, and variances. Apply knowledge of financial applications/processes and analytical skills to prepare the operating budget, month-end financial review, and forecasting processes.
  • Process monthly, quarterly, and annual financial transactions. Monitor and reconcile our financial activity across a variety of funding sources.
  • Verify and process monthly recharge billing of internal and external users, manage external customer maintenance and A/R follow up with the UM Shared Services Center (SSC).
  • Prepare cost model recharge rate requests for the Office of Financial Analysis and provide guidance on core facilities costing.
  • Regularly track metrics including publications, citations, awards, proposals, expenditures, and patent/technology transfer activities.
  • Maintain occupancy information for BI?s space and work with departments to complete annual space survey.
  • Assist the BI Managing Director in establishing internal controls, procedures, and systems.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other CoE research cores, and other UM units and partners to address issues as they arise.
  • Support procurement activities and handle approval requests from SSC.
  • Other duties as assigned, including preparation or coordination of proposals and budgets for equipment, training programs or similar efforts for submission to sponsors; working with the BI Managing Director to respond to internal or external audit requests; and participation in Unit, College and University-wide initiatives for process and policy changes.
  • Special assignments and projects as needed.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree or relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience; 3+years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with fund accounting, financial policies and procedures, and data analysis.
  • Ability to function independently with minimal oversight and direction.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Business administration education or experience.
  • Familiarity with recharge processes at the University of Michigan or other academic institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to use M-Pathways, M-Reports and Business Objects, or equivalent software and applications.
