HDR's Fire & Life Safety (FLS) team is continuing to expand our market sector expertise across HDR's client base, including Civic (e.g., high-rises, auditoriums/arenas, detention, recreational), Federal (DoD, NASA, VA, NPS, GSA), Healthcare, Resources (hazardous materials, power, hydropower, waste, oil/gas/LNG, mining, industrial, fuels, material handling), Science/Tech/Labs, Transportation (aviation, rail, roads/bridges, marine, public transit), and Water (water/waste/storm treatment). Due to this growth, we are seeking a highly motivated Fire Protection Engineer to manage and grow a team consisting of fire protection engineers, fire protection specialists, and fire protection designers. This position reports directly to the Central Texas Building Engineering Services Business Group Manager and will work closely with the National Fire & Life Safety Program Lead and Regional Fire & Life Safety Managers, serving in a consultant role to our internal project teams as well as external clients.

As a member of our FLS team, successful candidates will be tasked with executing production. They will also have a key role in providing leadership in continually evolving and delivering our fire & life safety design services, which include active and passive fire and life safety systems, code consulting, life safety and egress evaluations, performance-based design, fire/smoke/egress modeling, inspection and plan review, hazard and risk analysis, emergency management and planning, structural fire protection, fire root cause analysis, and accessibility consulting.

Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Fire & Life Safety Business Class Leader, we'll count on you to:

  • Take responsibility for area coordination, monitoring and improvement of technical competencies of business class staff and products to meet client needs and market drivers, all within direction and goals of business class plans
  • Participate in delivery of project services to meet client expectations
  • Collaborate on business class efforts with area operations, marketing and project management
  • Participate in business class practice and professional discipline groups, project teams and activities to continually improve standards and best practices, and implement effective quality assurance and quality control reviews
  • Participate in business class strategic planning, budgeting and plan implementation
  • Fire protection engineering and code consulting efforts; you will be responsible as engineer of record for projects. Provide consulting for life safety, building, and fire code compliance.
  • Performing analysis of existing fire protection systems, as well as designing new fire protection systems including suppression systems, fire detection, alarm and mass notification systems
  • Develop thorough and clear Design Analysis, Summary of Code Requirements and Life Safety Plans, and accurate Reports.
  • Planning and design details including engineering concepts, distribution plans, riser diagrams, detail drawings, schedules, specifications, design analysis, engineering reports, etc.
  • Occasional on-site project observations and reviews; duties required to fulfill contractual obligations for construction phase services; overseeing other personnel assigned to this responsibility.
  • Experience in designing fire sprinkler, suppression, and fire alarm systems layouts utilizing hydraulic calculation programs, and knowledge of NFPA Codes, and International Building and Fire Codes is required
  • Be involved in marketing planning, proposals and interviews
  • Be directly involved with industrial and public clients in marketing, project production and related issues
  • Assist with local staff recruitment/hiring, quality control
  • Train, develop, and manage technical personnel
  • Perform other duties as needed


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
  • 10 years of experience
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values
  • Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience experienced in development and management of diverse teams
  • Works cooperatively with other area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
