Essential Job Functions

The New York office is seeking a Firmwide Legal Education & Development Associate Director to join our Legal Recruiting and Development Department. Reporting to the Firmwide Director of Legal Education & Development, this Associate Director will:
  • Oversee Legal Education across East Coast offices, starting with New York City, Miami and D.C. including:
  • All matters of CLE logistics and compliance
  • Guiding local office Legal Education Programming
  • Guiding local office Summer Associate Programs
  • Overseeing management of FW LED programming in local offices
  • Serve as a direct line to our NYC Partnership for all learning program and CLE
  • Partner with our Attorney Engagement team to align on NYC team initiatives and programs
  • Help decentralized management to oversee LED Professionals seated to the NYC office
  • Align with NYC LRD Business Service Professionals to foster a "One LRD" environment for NYC

The Legal Education & Development Associate Director is a highly visible and influential role within the firm. This Associate Director is charged with:
  • Building credible relationships with the NYC, D.C., and Miami office partnership, LRD, and Business Service Professionals
  • Overseeing, training on, and supporting the local execution of NYC, D.C, and Miami CLE compliance procedures
  • Providing strategic direction and implementation for NYC attorney training and development initiatives, as well as other assigned Firmwide initiatives and programs
  • Creating, coordinating, deploying, and surveying attorney learning and development programs
  • Evaluating and assessing all aspects of learning programs and recommending future strategies
  • End-to-end coordination of all event planning and management activities for learning programming
  • Participating across local, FW onboarding programming, and Kirkland University
  • Managing NYC Summer Associate Training programming along with department team members and attorney stakeholders
  • Engaging in the administration of our learning management system and related learning technology where applicable for attorney needs
  • Local hire integration for learning integration and development needs
  • Motivating high-level of collaboration with attorneys, knowledge management, and staff
  • Managing the detailed line items for the NYC portion of the Legal Education and Development budget:
  • Planning and forecasting budget expenses
  • Tracking planned expenses versus actual spend
  • Working with stakeholders as required to speak to, adjust, or analyze budget needs
  • Manage, coach, and guide Local LED leadership in Miami and D.C. offices in Legal Education programming, CLE, Summer Associate Programming
  • Working independently across a highly dynamic, growing firm

A successful candidate will have experience with the areas below.

  • Instructional design and development approaches aimed at delivering engaging learning experiences
  • Analyzing and evaluating existing programs for impact and alignment with firm needs, providing recommendations for learning experiences that increase reach, impact, and future capability requirements
  • Survey definition and development that considers audience needs for continuous improvement
  • Learning measurement that aligns to business strategy
  • Working with, identifying, developing, leading and managing key external vendor relationships as necessary
  • Working knowledge of Continuing Legal Education compliance procedures and systems
  • Working knowledge of Learning Management Systems, learning tools, processes, and procedures
  • Building and fostering working relationships with business partners across a global firm/organization

Qualifications & Requirements

Education, Work Experience, Skills
  • Bachelor's degree required; preferred Master's Degree in Human Resources or related discipline
  • Minimum fifteen years of progressive experience in learning & development functions and/or related disciplines
  • Senior level expertise across a variety of instructional methods and learning techniques including curriculum design principles, adult learning theory, and blended learning strategies
  • Excellent ability to engage with people at all levels of an organization
  • Clear communicator through a variety of both written and oral delivery methods
  • Ability to coach, mentor and manage teams (directly and indirectly)
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. Solid influencing, negotiation and facilitation skills with the ability to foster and maintain collaborative relationships.
  • Strong project management skills and business acumen
  • Proven change management skills.

Compensation:

The base salary range below represents the low and high end of the salary range for this position. This range may differ based on your experience and skill set, geographic location, and cost of living considerations. At Kirkland & Ellis, we consider compensation more than just a base salary. We also offer an exceptional range of flexible benefits, personal support and tailored learning and development opportunities all designed to help you realize your full potential both in life and at work.
  • New York City - $160,000 -$239,000
