Job Duties

The primary objective of the position is to provide assistance to the aquatic biologists in the Marion Regional Office that are responsible for fisheries resource management in southwest Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications

Assist fisheries biologists with field data collection to include annual fish population monitoring, special project sampling. Field surveys require the use of fish sampling equipment such as boat, barge, and backpack electrofishing units, seines, gill nets, and other fisheries and habitat sampling gears. Surveys require identifying fish species. Assist biologists with additional routine field work to include collecting water samples, regulation signage installation, and fish stocking. Must be comfortable on boats and handling nets and live fish.

Ensures all boats, motors, and other field equipment is maintained in proper working order. Responsible for general repair and maintenance of equipment as needed. Responsible for cleaning and storing field equipment after use. May be required to fabricate equipment or special use items for field use.

Assists other agency personnel in accomplishing their duties including sampling for game and nongame fish, freshwater mussels, and assisting with hatchery duties.

Assists in public and private outreach and educational to various age groups from K-12 to adult.

Additional Considerations

Employee should have some mechanical abilities to assemble structures using basic hand tools and to conduct simple repairs on boats and other field equipment. Some fisheries science or other natural resource background preferred. Capable of working in teams or with minimal supervision once trained in the specific duty. Must be knowledgeable in operating boat, barge, and backpack electrofishers, various net sampling gears, as well as other fisheries sampling equipment. Ability to operate all equipment and tools necessary for stream and lake assessments (flow meters, temperature monitors, chemistry meters etc.). Must be comfortable in and around fast flowing water with special emphasis on using canoes and motor boats. Must be able to identify most of Virginia's game fish species in situ, in-hand, and as vouchered specimens. Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally to all age groups and organizational types. Must be able to work independently, under supervision and occasionally as supervisor. Must be available for frequent and extended overnight travel including some weekends.
