Description
The purpose of this classification is to perform technical and skilled maintenance and repairs on city fleet vehicles, heavy duty trucks, buses, fire and police vehicles and apparatus, heavy mobile equipment, and related equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Supervisor, Fleet Maintenance.
Examples of Duties
Performs major overhauls and minor repairs on gas and diesel automotive and mechanical equipment, such as: engines, transmissions, differentials, electrical systems, front ends, brakes, and AC systems. Uses computer and diagnostic equipment in determining mechanical problems; activates work orders and orders parts. Uses a variety of mechanics' tools in completing repairs and maintenance tasks. Performs minor welding and fabricating of parts as needed. Road tests vehicles to ensure repairs are complete. Completes preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Follows established safety precautions; disposes of oils, solvents and other products per EPA regulations. Receives service calls and drives wrecker to tow disabled vehicles; operates according to OSHA and State DOT laws and regulations; and provides road repairs as necessary. Conducts motor vehicle inspections. Prepares required maintenance and repair records. May operate a forklift.
Under general supervision performs repairs and skilled maintenance activities to restore fleet vehicles and equipment to service and safe operation.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or GED, with vocational or technical training in automotive and/or diesel equipment repair; with three (3) years experience in automotive/diesel engine maintenance and repair work to include electronic diagnostic experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. ASE certification in appropriate area is desired. Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment.

Positions assigned to Transit Department will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana CDL-B driver's license with air brakes and passenger endorsement within five (5) months of hire.
