Position Details

POSITION SUMMARY

Under Shop Foreman’s supervision, this person will be performing all types of repairs; minor adjustments to major overhauls on all types of light and medium duty school buses and other vehicles as needed.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs all mechanical functions from minor repairs to major overhauls on school buses, Vans, mechanic vehicles, work trucks, etc.
  • Works on all bus systems which include (but are not limited to) engine, electrical, fuel, drivetrain and brakes.
  • Performs inspection of vehicles and adjusting, repairing and replacing parts as required.
  • Identify and execute mechanical system preventative maintenance procedures to prevent breakdowns, prolong equipment life and minimize interruptions to the drivers.
  • Troubleshoot total automotive mechanical and electrical systems to identify and correct system or equipment problems (typically, gm and ford engines, transmissions, cooling systems, power steering systems and electrical systems).
  • Operate, maintain, and repair district equipment including but not limited to generators, pump trucks, welders, lot sweepers, trailers.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair fuel tanks and delivery systems for gas, diesel, and propane systems.
  • Perform a variety of vehicle maintenance tasks assigned to those of the machinist/mechanic trade.
  • Must become certified in inspecting busses for annual inspections.
  • Must be willing to drive students as a last measure if no one is available.
  • Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Substantial knowledge/familiarity with all types of vehicle systems.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment skillfully and safely in conformance with regulations and policies.
  • Ability to operate district-owned vehicles in accordance with established policies and perform most work independently.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of pollution control equipment.
  • Knowledge of electric/ hybrid power systems and/or the ability to learn these systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform all types of emergency repairs.
  • Demonstrated ability to take directions as needed and ask for assistance if necessary.
  • Temperament suited for performing repetitive duties.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Permanent status as Journeyman Mechanic.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in mechanical related fields.
  • Five or more years of experience in the areas of engine performance; air conditioning systems; axles and differentials; wiring schematics; electrical repair; hydraulic brake system service; and transmission diagnosis.
  • Experience with replacing engines and transmissions.
  • Ability to pass State Fire Marshal’s Propane Fitters test.
  • Ability to pass a forklift certification test.
  • Possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Oregon CDL.
  • Ability to pass Oregon Department of Education test that is required before you can perform an annual inspection on a vehicle that transports students.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

COMPENSATION AND WORK YEAR

Salary: DCU - Appendix B, $36.90 per hour

FTE: 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week)

Work Year: 260 Days (year-round work)

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Allowances: Following completion of one year of service, school bus Mechanics will receive a tool allowance of $400.00 per year. It is the shared expectation of both the District and the Union that the tool allowance will be used to purchase quality tools, for use at work. The District will pay a safety shoe allowance of $150.00 per year to each employee who is required to wear safety toe shoes as provided herein.
