Job Summary

This position is a classified civil service and United Steelworkers of America union position.

Civil service testing for this position will include:
  • Multiple-Choice Exams: The multiple-choice test is a written test used to measure general abilities and/or specific job knowledge of one or more subjects. Candidates are required to choose the correct or best answer from a list of three (3) to five (5) possible responses.
Civil Service testing will be conducted in person in late June.

Job Summary:

Performs the skilled work necessary for the maintenance and repair of the City and Township's fleet of vehicles and equipment in a cost-efficient manner, keeping them in a safe and useable condition. Works under the general supervision of the Fleet Management Superintendent.

Essential Job Functions
  • Performs general fleet maintenance repairs of all types and nature as required. Repairs to include any time of unit belonging to the City or Township, including, but not limited to: Fire/Rescue/Medic units, Police Department vehicles, construction equipment (backhoes, trailers, skid steers, etc.), lawnmowers, generators (stationary and portable), parks and recreation equipment, up-fitting of new vehicles with sirens, light bars and equipment, etc.
  • Performs welding, cutting fabrication, and machine work as required; must know of and demonstrate proficiency in the usage of all shop tools.
  • Accounts for daily time utilizing equipment provided - direct and indirect labor hours combined must total the hours worked daily; generates work orders that accurately reflect all labor performed and parts utilized in daily repairs; closes work orders as soon as possible upon completion of the work; accurately and thoroughly completes all forms and documentation associated with repairs or preventative maintenance performed.
  • Operates all City and Township vehicles and equipment.
  • Interfaces with City departmental representatives, vendors, and external customers in a manner that positively represents the City.
  • Maintains all certifications and licenses required by the City; achieves and maintains proficiency in test equipment, tools, and diagnostic skills required to maintain City units.
  • Promotes and follows all Safety Standards and necessary safety precautions; keeps work floor shop areas clean and free of clutter.
  • Performs all duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Carries Standby pager on a rotational basis with a 30-minute response time under normal circumstances.
  • Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • 1 year of basic experience in maintenance and repair within the fleet industry.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Current and valid Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driver's abstract to meet criteria for insurability established by the City of Gahanna.
  • Possession of a Class B CDL driver's license valid in the State of Ohio within the first year of the date of hire.
Knowledge of:
  • Tools, components, and equipment used in the repair of fleet equipment.
  • Variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of fleet equipment.
  • Use of common hand and power tools, including but not limited to hoists, welders, presses, tire changers/balancers, and brake lathes.
  • Hazards of the work and the necessary safety precautions.
Skill in:
  • Skill in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the repair of fleet equipment.
  • Applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks; to understand, interpret, and communicate complicated policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Operating and maintaining all assigned equipment required to perform the essential functions of the job.
Ability to: (Mental and Physical Abilities)
  • Perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
  • Organize work: setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
Working Conditions:
  • The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. The work may require specialized personal protective equipment.
Important Job Functions
  • This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas using the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Visual acuity is required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities.

  • Works with other departments regularly including employees from the City of Gahanna, Jefferson and Mifflin Townships, and the general public.
