Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of leadership and management of diverse fleet maintenance fields and strong communication skills. The candidate performs operational, administrative, and supervisory functions in the coordination of repairs, maintenance, customer service, and staffing for large fleet operations supporting the Hillsborough County Fleet Management Department.

The candidate would function as a self-motivated supervisor who keeps their team engaged while keeping their chain of command well-informed. The candidate would efficiently and accurately complete the necessary paperwork associated with the position and utilize good time-management skills for themselves and their staff. The candidate will communicate regularly with staff to determine resource needs and assign work tasks as needed. Candidates should possess computer skills with standard software such as Excel, Word, Outlook, etc., and knowledge of a computer-operated fleet management system.

Job Overview -

This position is responsible for performing operational, administrative, and supervisory functions in the coordination of repairs, maintenance, customer service, and staffing for large fleet operation supporting Hillsborough County Fleet Management Department. Incumbents in this classification perform the duties of the operation, as well as first-line supervisory duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises, evaluates performance, and administers disciplinary actions.
  • Prioritizes and monitors projects, activities, and assignments to ensure completion of deadlines.
  • Assigns and tracks work of repair and maintenance staff; determines reassignment or remedial action, as needed.
  • Conducts on-the-job training for subordinate staff.
  • Assesses staffing needs and identifies shortfalls; assists with recruiting, interviewing and hiring of repair and maintenance staff.
  • Resolves complex operational and administrative issues involving repairs, maintenance, customer service, and staffing.
  • Recommends and implements operational and administrative decisions regarding policies and procedures to improve efficiencies.
  • Coordinates and schedules workloads with various county customers to ensure minimal downtime of vehicles and equipment.
  • Creates, updates, and maintains ad-hoc reports providing various information such as, repair and maintenance history, staffing, budgetary requirements, and procurement actions.
  • Determines procurement needs regarding supplies, tools, and equipment to track and monitor expenses.
  • Schedules and attends meetings, training sessions, educational courses; reviews videos, online resources, and paper manuals and materials to maintain current repair and maintenance methods and practices.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Job Specifications
  • Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of automotive, light and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of automotive, light and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of county, state and federal industrial safety and hazardous waste handling policies and regulations.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Ability to identify and correct discrepancies between work performed and specifications.
  • Ability to assess training needs, schedule and conduct training activities.
  • Ability to use a computer and related software.

Physical Requirements
  • This position is primarily in an office environment requiring an employee to be able to bend, reach, stoop, stand, and or walk for extended periods of time.
Work Category
  • Medium work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Minimum Qualifications Required
  • Graduation from High School or possession of a GED certificate; and successful completion of an accredited vocational school or technical training program; AND
  • Ten years of professional experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, or equipment; including two of those years in a supervisory capacity; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies listed above; AND
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License, with no more than seven points charged to record at any time; AND
  • Possession Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with endorsement (s) may be required within the probationary period; AND
  • Possession of at least one of the following Master ASE Certifications:
  • Master ASE Certification in Automobile/Light Truck; or
  • Master ASE Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck; AND
  • Possession of EPA approved Section 609 Certification.
Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department, the County's Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during, or after the emergency/disaster.
