Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including or supplemented by twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology, botany, land surveying and forest biology,

OR

one (1) year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two (2) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.

Duties Description Incumbent will complete forest inventory and prepare timber sales on state forest properties under the direction of a Forester 1 and/or Forestry Technician II. Incumbent will be required to:
• Gather and input forest inventory data into the State Forest Inventory Database
• Assist with timber type mapping and inventory plot layout using GIS technology.
• Collect stand analysis data and mark timber according to Forester's marking guide and prescription
• Assist with lay out and inspection of timber sales
• Use Arc GIS for creating and editing shapefiles and maps
Incumbent may be required to work alone in rough terrain during all seasons.

Essential skills include tree identification, tree diameter and height measurement, GPS navigation and GIS ability. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to: calculating timber volumes, summarizing timber tallies, preparing timber sale maps, and assisting with recreation projects. Good public relation skills are required. Must have the ability to use basic forestry equipment including electronic data collector, compass, Biltmore stick, point sample prism, and have working knowledge of Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat, and ESRI ArcGIS computer software.

This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2025, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
