Job Description

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

As a member of the school counseling team, under the direction of the resource counselor and school principal and/or designee, develops and implements a comprehensive college and career information program for students in Grades 9-12 and maintains the College and Career Center. Utilizing technology, collects, reviews, selects, maintains, and distributes a wide variety of information concerning colleges, trade schools, vocational and employment opportunities, and career information. Assists students in all aspects of the college planning process including the application process, testing, financial aid, and scholarships. Supports the work of the school counseling program by meeting with students and parents individually and/or in groups on career planning and college entry process. Builds and maintains rapport with college, career, military, and the business community in order to gather and disseminate current information and resources.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the college selection, testing, application, and admissions process; knowledge of vocational/technical/career school programs and admissions. Knowledge of computerized career information systems, college related software such as SAT/PSAT/Accuplacer/ACT prep computerized programs, college application software, and financial aid systems, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge. Ability to access college and career information from a variety of sources, including the internet. Knowledge of the business and employment principles and practices of private industry, local, state, and federal governments; knowledge of a variety of occupations and their associated terminology; knowledge of state of Maryland labor regulations for minors; knowledge of high school courses/programs and graduation requirements. Ability to evaluate, prioritize and organize materials received in the Career Center as well as the tasks required to keep the Center a viable resource for students and their parents. Excellent oral, written communications and human relations skills. Able to deal courteously and effectively with colleagues and all who use the center; ability to develop and maintain effective career information programs; ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing duties. Knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors degree required. Experience in the field of college and career information and planning or business and employment practices. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
