Job Description
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Under direction, provides a comprehensive developmental program of guidance and counseling to assist ESOL students in the area of acculturation, academic achievement, career/educational decision-making, and personal and social development. Acts as consultant in this regard to school staff, parents, and community members.
CERTIFICATE LICENSE:
Meets Maryland state certification requirements for school guidance and counseling.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the MCPS Policies and Procedures, the ESOL Instructional Program, and the Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program. Knowledge of growth and development stages of children. Knowledge of cross-cultural and multicultural counseling. Ability to read, take notes, and interpret written material. Ability to work effectively as part of a team or independently with staff, students, and parents. Ability to use a computer and other technological equipment. Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to speak effectively and fluently in English and Spanish to large and small groups. Excellent human relations skills with the ability to establish good relationships with a multilingual, multicultural community.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in school guidance and counseling required. Experience as a teacher and/or counselor for ESOL students preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish required. Must meet Maryland state certification requirements for school guidance and counseling.
