Job Description
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Under direction of the Supervisor of Physical Disabilities and the InterACT team leader, the InterACT special education teacher provides consultation, training, and instructional support to students with disabilities around alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) and access and works in collaboration with the general education teachers and related service providers. Assists in the development of Individual Education Programs (IEP).
CERTIFICATE LICENSE:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position, MCPS special education program. Thorough knowledge of Individual Education Program (IEP), learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices incorporating AAC, research based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education. Ability to provide instructional support. Works well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents of students with disabilities. Ability to appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials. Collects instructional data for decision making process. Excellent communication skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable. Must be fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
