ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Planning & Development Department guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. A host of advisory and governing bodies of residents as well as elected officials provide oversight as the city grows and needs arise. The process is governed through development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances.

The General Inspector II is responsible for the inspection of all aspects of residential construction for conformance with the City's building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and zoning requirements. Assignments involve inspection of new residential construction and alteration and repair work. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed by the General Inspections Team Leader.

Responsibilities include:
  • Inspection of new homes, additions and alterations to existing homes.
  • Inspection of swimming pools, utility connections to mobile homes, and periodic safety inspections of existing mobile home parks.
  • Ordering compliance when violations are discovered.
  • Employees work independently in the field and are responsible for making decisions requiring technical discretion, sound judgment, and familiarity with a variety of adopted codes, city ordinances, and construction methods or problems.
Opportunity to Underfill at the General Inspector I level.

Individuals that do not meet the minimum requirements below for the General Inspector II may qualify for the opportunity to Underfill at the General Inspector I level. This position is responsible for the inspection of all aspects of residential construction for conformance with the City's building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and zoning requirements. Assignments involve inspection of new residential construction and alteration and repair work.

Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed by the General Inspections Field Supervisor or the General Inspections Supervisor. After successfully completing a twelve-month probationary period and achieving required certifications, incumbents will promote to a General Inspector II.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Knowledge of International Residential Code (IRC).
  • Knowledge of construction principles, methods, materials, and disciplines.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with a team.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to utilize various computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Salesforce.

SALARY

General Inspector II

Pay Range: $27.49 to $44.77 per hour.

Hiring Range: $27.49 to $40.61 per hour.

General Inspector I

Pay Range: $24.93 to $40.61 per hour.

Hiring Range: $24.93 to $33.41 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

General Inspector II
  • Two years of experience inspecting all aspects of residential construction for conformance with City building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and zoning requirements (two years at the level of General Inspector I).
  • By end of probation, must obtain TWO of the five certifications OR obtain an ICC Residential Combination Inspector Certification:
    • ICC Residential Building Inspector
    • ICC Residential Electrical Inspector OR IAEI Electrical Inspector, One- and TwoFamily Dwelling
    • ICC Residential Mechanical Inspector
    • ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner
    • IAPMO Plumbing Inspector OR ICC Residential Plumbing Inspector
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. General Inspector I
  • Documented completion of three years of building construction experience working at a skilled journey level in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, masonry or related building trades, or certification by a model code agency as an Inspector or Plan Reviewer.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • By the end of probation, must obtain ONE certification from the following five areas listed:
    • ICC Residential Building Inspector
    • ICC Residential Electrical Inspector OR IAEI Electrical Inspector, One- and TwoFamily Dwelling
    • ICC Residential Mechanical Inspector
    • IAPMO Plumbing Inspector OR ICC Residential Plumbing Inspector
    • ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner

  • Journeyman level construction experience
  • Residential Construction Experience.
  • Residential Inspection experience.
  • Residential Plan Review Experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
