Position Description

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

- Maintains highways and right-of-ways; performs skilled roadway repairs, erects and repairs guardrails, highway markers and signs, hauls equipment and materials to the job site.

- Operates various light and heavy equipment

- Performs preventative maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment.

- Assists the public during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, winter storms, accidents, or hazmat spills.

- Assist with traffic control; place and gather cones, warning signs and barricades, flag traffic; and as required moves items related to these activities, including removing debris from roadways.

- Assists in repairing and installing signs, delineation, mail box supports and post.

- Use of hand and power tools, and handling material weighing up to 50lbs.

- Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: No education required.

Experience: GTT I = No experience required; GTT II = 1 year experience*

*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .

Licenses and Certifications:

      • Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
      • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.

- Using basic mathematical fundamentals

- Prioritizing and organizing work assignments.

- Using of light and heavy highway equipment

- Follow verbal and written instructions

- Using computers and applicable programs, applications and systems.

- Communicate effectively

- Maintaining a safe working relationship

- Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

- Subject to environmental conditions, protection from weather but not temperature changes

- Subject to outside environmental conditions, no effective weather protection

- Subject to extreme cold and heat, below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

- Subject to noise

- Subject to vibration

- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.

- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.

- Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.

- Reaching-extending hand (s) and arms (s) in any direction.

- Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels, receive information by oral communication
