Position Information

TxDOT is looking for a General Transportation Tech I, II, or III for the Denton Area Office based in Denton, TX. A General Transportation Technician for construction inspection gets out in the field and oversee the construction of our roadways. We are looking for hard-working, dedicated individuals who enjoy learning new things and getting their hands dirty. Our current inspection projects include new roadway construction, bridge demolitions and replacements, farm-to-market rehabilitations, and various other roadway projects. Position Description

General Transportation Tech I : Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

General Transportation Tech II : Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

General Transportation Tech III : Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

General Transportation Tech I, II or III :

  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Additional duties for a General Transportation Tech II or III to include :

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for

    compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
  • Reviews plans, enters data and updates, stores and maintains plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) documents and files; assists in PS&E processing for letting, to include reproducing and distributing documents.
  • Reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures, and design guidelines.
  • Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various

    required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Additional duties for a General Transportation Tech III to include:

  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Inspects and processes damage claims.
  • Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
  • Performs hand and/or computer-aided drafting, design and calculating work.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: No education required.

Experience: GTT I = No experience required; GTT II = 1 year experience*; GTT III = 2 years' experience*

*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
