TxDOT's Dallas District is looking for a Maintenance General Transportation Tech I, II, or III for the Special Crews Bridge Crew based in Hutchins, TX. In this position, you will perform skilled transportation maintenance activities related to highway Bridges and Highway maintenance. Work includes operating light, and heavy equipment, hand tools and working with a professional environment. Special Crews work Monday through Thursday with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off. Position Description

General Transportation Tech I:

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, maintenance, and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

General Transportation Tech II:

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

General Transportation Tech III:

Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for the General Transportation Tech I, II, III include:

  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned


Additional duties for General Transportation Tech II include:

  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.


Additional duties for General Transportation Tech III include:

  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications
  • Trains other employees.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway

    markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: No education required.

Experience: GTT I = No experience required; GTT II = 1 year experience*; GTT III = 2 years experience*

*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .

Licenses and Certifications:

      • Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
      • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Required to wear protective gear, including, respirator, hard hat, steal toed boots, and other equipment or devices
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise and vibration
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
