JOB DESCRIPTION:
Perform mechanical repairs to ensure proper performance and safety of District generators and automatic transfer switches where possible. Work on projects assigned, follow established procedures.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Inspect, service, and repair all generators as needed or on scheduled intervals.

  2. Maintain complete set of preventative maintenance records on all generators.

  3. Documents modifications to system.

  4. Record time (labor) and material on work orders.

  5. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.

  6. Work on Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS).

  7. Follow established safety procedures such as Lock Out/ Tag Out and other techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.

  8. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.

  9. Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.

  10. Inspect tools and equipment for safety and efficiency and perform preventive maintenance as needed.

  11. Perform preventive maintenance including checking for leaks, worn parts, taking oil samples; order and install replacement parts; adjust, calibrate and inspect the operation of all generators and Automatic Transfer Switches.

  12. Respond to emergency calls as needed and be on-call/stand-by as assigned by supervisor.

  13. Manage repairs and schedule contractor when needed.

  14. Assist Electrical supervisor with the use of contractors and the associated invoicing.

  15. Maintain confidentiality.

  16. Regular attendance.

  17. Other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 5 years of mechanic work on gasoline and diesel engines

  • A minimum of 2 years of electrical experience
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas driving license
  • Electrical Apprentice Card issued by TDLR
  • Electrical Generating Systems Association--Journeyman Certification or obtain within one year of employment

Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to repair and maintain gas and diesel motors and small engines
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems
  • Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in generator repair
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and generator parts
  • Ability to investigate, diagnose, troubleshoot and repair diesel standby and transfer switch system problems
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, service manuals, panels and meters
  • Ability to deal with problems on a priority basis and investigate all alternatives
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to automatic transfer switches, diesel or gas engines and diesel or gas engine driven electric generators
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the maintenance and repair of diesel or gas electric generating equipment
  • Ability to make modifications to diesel generator systems, including installation of pre-heaters; battery chargers; fuel systems and other related diesel or gas parts

Work outside and inside and around moving objects or vehicles, work on ladders and scaffolding. Exposure to dampness and humidity and slippery or uneven walking surfaces.
