Pay Range

$6,410.00 - $7,780.00 Monthly

This position is under a step structure. Please note that the step placement is determined by your most recent completed academic year.

Job Description

We have an opening for an Academic Graduate Appointee to provide technical and scientific service in executing laboratory experiments which includes preparation of solid, liquid and gas samples, laboratory measurements such as ion chromatograph, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, gas chromatography, total organic and inorganic carbon quantification, and synchrotron-based materials characterization. This position is in the Porous Media group in the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division and will keep up the execution of a project on enhanced hydrogen production from subsurface mineral deposits.

Essential Duties:
  • Provide support to experimental geochemistry projects.
  • Prepare laboratory samples for batch and core flood experiments.
  • Perform dilutions to prepare samples for fluid characterization techniques like ICP-MS in a clean lab environment.
  • Prepare samples for solid sample characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and/or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
  • Implement and follow experimental procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook of observations. Provide weekly progress reports and contribute to scientific publications and documents.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • BS in geology, earth sciences, or in a related science discipline.
  • Experience working in an analytical laboratory or materials characterization laboratory.
  • Familiarity with the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and general reagent/sample preparation techniques.
  • Proficient in data manipulation and statistical analysis in Excel.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to convey technical information effectively to peers and managers.
  • Ability to work on-site several days a week.
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations and interact effectively with collaborators.

  • Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in rock sample preparation, including mineral phase quantification using Profex software.

Security Clearance

This position requires either no security clearance, or a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level or Q-level clearance depending on theparticular assignment.

If you are selected and a security clearance is required, wewillinitiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. L and Q-level clearances require U.S. citizenship.
