The permanent/full time Groundskeeper will be directed by the Utility Shops Supervisor (Mechanical) in Plant Operations at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:
• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment associated with the Grounds Department
• Has the physical agility to work on his/her hands and knees for a prolonged time, lift and carry a minimum of seventy pounds
• Operates numerous types of equipment in the Grounds Department, such as: lawn mowers, sweepers, rototillers, tractors, aerators, edgers, weedeaters, etc.
• Cleans and maintains shops and storage areas where equipment, materials and supplies are kept for daily operation
• Maintains a working knowledge of current or new Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)/Safety Data Sheets(SDS)
• Maintains an ongoing safety program on a daily basis pertaining to hazardous waste chemicals and materials used in the department's operation
• Reads, understands and conforms to all Hospital Administrative Directives and Plant Operations policies
• Maintains daily tool control procedures and instructs all concerned in proper tool control

1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at Groundskeeper Exam Bulletin , OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.
*Minimum qualifications will be verified prior to being scheduled for an interview. Please provide proof of minimum qualifications with your application submission, which may include a copy of your unofficial college transcripts and/or out of class paperwork .
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Either I Six months of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Service Assistant (Maintenance).
Or II One year of experience in flower gardening and general grounds maintenance work.
Or III Successful completion of a formal vocational training program in flower gardening and general grounds maintenance work such as those operated under the Manpower Development Training Act, the Work Incentive Program, or similar programs operated by State, Federal, or local agencies through school districts.
Or IV Education: Completion of a two-year curriculum in ornamental horticulture or landscape work at the junior college or college level. (Persons registered in the last year of the required curriculum will be admitted to the examination, but must produce evidence of completion of the required education before eligible for appointment.)
