This is a full-time (non-exempt) position with the expectation of flexible work schedule to meet college and department needs. Work is primarily during weekdays with ability to resolve issues as needed. Some weekend work may be required on a limited basis.

Piedmont Virginia Community College ( PVCC ) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia - principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Our scenic campus is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. We are one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System ( VCCS ).

Position Title: Trades Technician I, Groundskeeper

Division/Office: Piedmont Virginia Community College, Facilities Department

Employment Type: Full time, Classified, non-exempt

Purpose: To ensure the appropriate appearance and maintenance of the buildings and the grounds located on the Piedmont Virginia Community College Campus.

Duties and Responsibilities-shall include but are not limited to:
  • Cutting grass, removing leaves
  • Trimming hedges, trees, bushes, and limbs
  • Clearing snow, ice, mud, and sand from walkways, parking lots, and roadways
  • Picking up trash daily
  • Maintaining and ensuring all grounds equipment is in good working order
  • Assisting in relocating furniture and surplus items as needed
  • Performing other duties as assigned in support of the College
  • Available for “on call” duties during emergency situations, beyond working hours

This position is designated essential staff and is required to respond to inclement weather situations such as snow, ice storms, hurricanes, etc.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques and safety practices
  • Skilled in the operation and safe use of grounds maintenance equipment, vehicles, tractors, and attachments
  • Ability to prioritize work activities
  • Experience working in a team setting
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Additional Considerations
  • Considerable experience in groundskeeping or grounds maintenance
