Job Summary:
The University Research, Demonstration and Display Gardens was established at West Madison Agricultural Research Station (WMARS) in the mid-1990s. As a teaching/demonstration site open to the public, we showcase and evaluate the newest horticultural cultivars fit for our region. The 6-acre garden serves multiple purposes including fruit and vegetable research, plant evaluation research trials, public demonstration for self-guided touring and education, intern training and student education. Assisting horticultural research is also necessary.

Responsibilities: Directs and coordinates activities of workers engaged in landscaping, gardening, grounds keeping, and tree pruning activities to ensure completion of grounds work assignments. May assist in planning and implementing landscaping projects.
  • 20% Plans and directs the day-to-day operational activities of various lawn and landscape projects and staff
  • 10% Schedules and monitors staff and assists with basic training
  • 15% Assists with organizing the layout of planting sites, plant and material selection, research and evaluate new materials and equipment
  • 20% Installs, propagates, and maintains the health of new and existing plants and landscape using a variety of vehicles and equipment
  • 10% Identifies and acts to remedy plant diseases and insect damage
  • 5% Maintains clean and clear lawns, walkways, roadways, and parking lots to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
  • 10% Executes the technical day-to-day operational activities of a greenhouse complex including the following; clean & prepare pots/trays, seeding, up-potting veg liners to bigger pots and watering.
  • 10% Maintain small engines/equipment used in the display garden and grounds.

Qualifications:
Required:
-Must have at a least 2 yrs experience with a range of horticultural plants
-Experience managing woody and herbaceous plants both in greenhouse and in landscape setting
-Prior experience operating farm and utility tractors and loaders, forklifts

Preferred:
-Experience operating field-scale equipment such as 3-pt attached tillers, plastic layers, brush mowers
-Experience with operation and maintenance of landscape equipment such as bed edgers, chainsaws, and commercial mowers.
-Experience in an agricultural research setting
-Experience with large truck operation (CDL)
License/Certification:

Drivers License - Valid

Work Schedule:
For approximately 9 months of each calendar year, normal hours are full-time (100%) 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. For approximately 3 months of each calendar year in the offseason/winter, this position will be part-time (50%).

Additional Information:
-A probationary period will be required.
-A criminal background check will be required.
-Work is primarily outdoors during the growing season; work is physically demanding and environments include the display garden, field and grounds, greenhouse, machine shop; we work through inclement weather (hot, cold, wet) and in dusty conditions.
-Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
