Job Title - Grounds Maintenance Technician

Supervised by/Reports to: Grounds Maintenance Foreman

Supervises: NA

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Job Goals:
  • To provide excellent grounds maintenance services to ensure clean, safe, well-maintained, comfortable and efficient educational and work environments for students and personnel of the Enterprise City Schools System.
  • To assist supervisors and school system administrators in the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of facilities problems or unsafe conditions.
  • To assist with the effective management of school system equipment, fiscal and material resources, personnel, and properties.

Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or GED preferred.
  2. Possess and maintain valid driver's license.
  3. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  4. Ability to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, dirty, extreme temperatures, and inclement weather.
  5. Knowledge of equipment, tools, and procedures of grounds maintenance, grass cutting, herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform routine maintenance and repairs on grounds keeping equipment.
  7. Demonstrates a sound working knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in grounds keeping, lawn maintenance, irrigation, and grass cutting.
  8. Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills.
  9. Ability to read and follow plans, directions, and lay-outs for maintenance and grounds keeping projects.
  10. Ability to prioritize tasks.
  11. Ability to make estimates of time and material needed for efficient project completion.
  12. Ability to effectively perform simultaneous projects and initiatives while meeting multiple deadlines.
  13. High level of personal initiative and ability to work without close supervision.
  14. Ability to climb and work from scaffolding, ladders, and heights.
  15. Ability to engage in prolonged standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning and reaching.
  16. Strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  17. Ability exert up to 75 pounds of force.
  18. Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, shift work or holidays if necessary.
  19. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  20. Such alternative qualifications to those listed as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Follows an effective program of grounds keeping and grass cutting for assigned outdoor areas and school properties according to assigned schedule.
  2. Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.
  3. Demonstrates skill, safety, and knowledge when operating equipment and using materials to care for grounds, plants, outdoors areas, and assigned spaces.
  4. Uses proper safety equipment as appropriate when performing grounds keeping and maintenance
  5. Plants and prunes shrubs, trees, and flowers according to established schedules and procedures.
  6. Removes debris from lawn and grounds prior to mowing assigned areas. Removes debris from stairs and walks, rakes leaves, weeds shrubbery and flower areas, and mows lawns and fields.
  7. Waters trees, shrubs, and lawns and performs irrigation activities according to established schedules and procedures.
  8. Operates power lawn mowers, edgers, hand tools, and large vehicles associated with ground maintenance, hauling and collecting debris, and landscaping.
  9. Sprays for weeds and insects using unrestricted chemicals as required.
  10. Stores, uses, and disposes of chemicals, fertilizers, trash, debris, cleaners, and products efficiently, safely, and in accordance with established procedures and instructions.
  11. Assists in the maintenance of parking lots, walkways, outdoor learning areas, playing fields and sports fields, fence lines, including asphalt or paved areas as needed.
  12. Assists with the routine inspection of building exteriors and grounds for safety hazards, repairs, or service and reports needs or solves issues according to established school system procedures.
  13. Follows established guidelines for dealing with emergency repair problems with efficiency.
  14. Maintains and reports inventory of materials and supplies as needed, and makes recommendations of supplies and equipment for purchase.
  15. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  16. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  17. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  18. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  19. Follows written and verbal instructions and communicates effectively with others (custodial staff, vendors, school staff, students, parents, community members).
  20. Engages in professional growth, ongoing training, and demonstrates professional ethics.
  21. Engages in required orientations, trainings, safety instruction, and meetings as required for effective job performance and/or advancement.
  22. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  23. Properly uses and cares for tools, equipment, vehicles and material resources of the school system.

  25. Keeps service trucks, assigned system vehicles, and equipment clean and serviced according to schedules and procedures of the school system Transportation Department.
  26. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  27. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  28. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  29. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment: Twelve month position in accordance with the Board's salary schedule.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Enterprise City Board of Education Policy on classified personnel evaluation.
