ORNL's Buildings and Transportation Science Division seeks an outstanding researcher and mentor to lead the Applied Catalysis and Emissions Research Group (ACERG) in the Propulsion Science Section. The mission of the Applied Catalysis and Emissions Research Group is to develop, understand, and demonstrate technologies for energy conversion that will achieve net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) and near-zero emissions of pollutants.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Supervise approximately 12 group members
  • Align behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service
  • Foster a safety culture based on the UT-Battelle Safe Conduct of Research Principles
  • Ensure that laboratory activities are compliant with DOE and ORNL safety requirements
  • Engage with program managers across ORNL to identify and develop research opportunities and funding streams, and lead or support proposals for funding
  • Ensure that staff understand how to manage their research projects to deliver results on scope, on schedule, and on budget while meeting scientific, technical, and business expectations
  • Support staff professional development through mentoring, sharing of opportunities, and identification of relevant training
  • Manage employee performance through setting objectives, providing timely feedback, and conducting reviews
  • Support recruiting and hiring to ensure the group has the right personnel to perform effectively
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for ACERG that leverages the unique resources of ORNL and includes specific plans for people, facilities, and science
  • Foster collaborations within and outside ORNL

Basic Qualifications:
  • BS degree in a science or engineering field with a focus in catalysis or an energy-related topic and a minimum of 15 years of experience or a MS degree and 12 years of experience or PhD and six years of relevant experience.
  • Distinguished record of research achievement, as evidenced by scholarly publications, patents, and funded research grants
  • Demonstrated track record of successful research and development leadership
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A proven history of working effectively in research teams
