The Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate's mission is to enable great science. The Guest Services Division provides services that support and assist the world-class scientific research performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Guest services are available to all Brookhaven Divisions, Departments, guests, users, and visiting researchers.

Brookhaven National Laboratory's Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate seeks a Head Lifeguard / Head Camp Counselor. This position reports to the Guest Services Division QOL/BERA/Recreation Supervisor.

Position Description

To assist the QOL/BERA/Recreation Supervisor in the general operation and management of the Pool Recreation Program and the year-round Camp Programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • To Assist the QOL/BERA/Recreation Supervisor in the general operation and management of the Recreation Program.
  • Supervise and lead a team of year-round lifeguards and seasonal summer camp counselors to ensure the safety and well-being of all campers/pool members.
  • Collaborate with the camp leadership team to plan and execute engaging and age-appropriate camp programs.
  • Oversee recreational pool activities.
  • Conduct regular training sessions for lifeguard staff covering safety protocols, emergency procedures, effective communication and ensure ongoing certifications.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to camp counselors, fostering a positive and supportive camp environment.
  • Manage daily scheduling of lifeguard and counseling staff to ensure proper coverage during all pool and camp activities.
  • Communicate effectively with campers, parents, and staff members to address any concerns and maintain positive relationships.
  • Administer pool memberships and programs while recording finances in a weekly report.
  • Oversee maintenance within the pool and recreational facilities.
  • Support the Department supervisor with any events, planning, and day-to-day operations as needed.
  • Comply with Laboratory policies, standards and procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify, report, and protect intellectual property and other proprietary information.
  • Maintain awareness of environmental impact of work and apply pollution prevention and waste minimization techniques.
  • Identify potential hazards, environmental concerns, and unsafe conditions or practices in work or at work site and implement or suggest controls to minimize risk.
  • Cease work activity, and/or issue a Stop Work Order upon observing imminent danger and report the danger immediately to supervisor or ESH Coordinator.
  • Respond to emergency situations, alarms, or occurrence in an appropriate manner.
  • Adhere to instructions on location warning signs and postings.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Lifeguard certification from a recognized authority (e.g., American Red Cross).
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • At least 5 years experience as a leader in the aquatics field.
  • At least 5 years experience as a camp counselor.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Passion for working with children and creating a positive camp experience.
  • Willingness to obtain certification as a Mandated Reporter by completing the required training within 3 months of employment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree or working towards a bachelor's degree.
  • Familiar with Registration/Scheduling software.
  • Some form of secretarial or office administration training.
  • Works independently within established procedures and guidelines. Handles non-routine office matters.
  • Takes initiative to complete recurring tasks without the need for guidance.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
  • Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities which include, but are not limited to, hiking, swimming, team building initiatives, physical games, and activities.
  • Must be able to withstand outdoor working conditions which may include summer heat and humidity.

Additional Job Information

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $ 65,650.00 - 75,500 USD Annual year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
