Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or mechanical engineering technology from an ABET accredited institution.
  • 5 years or more of relevant experience


Position Summary

The Head Mechanical Engineer will report directly to the Director of Engineering. Responsibilities will include oversite of mechanical design for the alteration, modification and repair of mechanical systems within existing building inventory and building in design and construction. Supervising others in the planning, designing and estimating projects. Designing projects utilizing Revit, Autocad, Trane Trace, Pipe-flo, and other various HVAC design software. This individual will mentor junior engineers. In addition, they will be required to stamp, and sign engineering documents, inspect projects under construction, and write clear and concise reports. Be a registered Engineer in the state of Georgia.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Knowledge of BIM, Revit, Pipe-Flo, Trane Trace, Excel.
  • Familiarity with the facility design process, be comfortable in mechanical rooms, capable of writing control sequences, and familiar with construction codes.
  • Registered Engineer in the state of Georgia.

  • Designs, plans, assigns, mentors, and supervises the work of in-house mechanical engineers, in the planning, designing, cost estimating and ordering materials and equipment for repair and alteration projects and new construction.

  • Manages work performed by design professionals contracted by UGA through all phases of preparation, on capital and small projects.

  • Confers with and advises various faculty, administrative personnel, and officials within UGA regarding proposed mechanical construction and alterations.

  • Updates the UGA design standards incorporating "lessons learned" and revising as needed to keep up with the latest codes, standards and technological changes.

  • Assisting Operations & Maintenance and Utilities and Energy Management personnel with the chilled water and steam distribution issues on campus including but not limited to assisting in design of improvements and keeping the campus-wide Chilled Water Pipe-Flo models, and Steam and condensate Schematics up to date.
