Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the guidance and direction of the Associate Director of Nursing, the Head Nurse is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating the quality of care rendered in her/his designated unit.

As Head Nurse,

she/he has the authority and

responsibility of managing the unit in order to guarantee quality of care for every patient assigned to the unit and is held accountable through the use of the nursing process. She/he is responsible for the implementation of the Nursing Department Philosophy and Objective of Nursing care into management of nursing care on the patients' units.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Receives report by making walking rounds with incoming/outgoing staff.
2. Coordinates patient care by collaborating with the multidisciplinary team.
3. Assesses each patient needs and establishes appropriate plan of care based on

Nursing Assessment and Diagnosis.
4. Maintains standards of care by ensuring that an individualized plan of care for each patient is developed and implemented.
5. Evaluates patient's response to interventions, and make modifications as needed.
6. Delegates assignments based on staff competence and priority of patient care.
7. Supervises and assists the staff in patient assessments, documentation,

implementation and evaluation of nursing care.
8. Supervises professional and non-professional personnel.
9. Makes rounds to check accuracy of the following
• Charting
• Nurses Notes
• Doctors' Order Sheets
• Patient Care Plan (EW)
• Narcotic Sheets
• Code Cart and emergency equipment is checked daily.
• Refrigerator temperature log
• Monitoring Tools
10. Supervises:
• Updating of medications including removal of recalled or outdated drugs
• Care of special drugs such as narcotic
• Care of medication cabinet/refrigerator

Minimum Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
1. Demonstrated ability in Emergency Nursing.
2. Awareness of the current established standards of nursing practice as promulgated by ANA, Joint Commission, & other Regulatory Agencies.
3. Understanding of the principles of leadership and unit management.
4. Knowledge and understanding of Infection Control, Fire and Electrical Safety and Disaster Management/Response. Communication, counseling and guidance, teaching, directing, set priorities, identifying and solving problems. Nursing process.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York

State.
2. BSN required and must have three years of relevant experience in nursing.
3. Demonstrated competence as a nursing practitioner.
4. Current certification in BCLS, ACLS and PALS according to the American Heart Association Standards.
