Pay Range: $142,050- $218,868 annually

$142,050- $182,388 annually for the TSS.3 level

$170,430- $218,868 annually for the TSS.4 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for aHealth Physicistin the Radiation Protection Functional Area (RPFA). In this role, you will provide advanced health physics (HP) support to ensure radiation safety programs at LLNL are effective and compliant. You will also provide solutions to complex HP issues/problems and provide support and guidance to radiological control personnel (e.g., field health physicists and technicians). This position is in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will
  • Evaluate and provide HP input on radiation safety policies and procedures. Draft, review, and maintain related institutional documents and RPFA-specific documents.
  • Conduct assessments and audits necessary to comply with applicable regulatory requirements. Support audits, inspections and site verifications by internal and external entities.
  • Act as the point of contact, as assigned, for radiation protection program functional elements (e.g., contamination control, posting and labeling, radiation generating device, etc.). Develop and maintain associated program documents and processes.
  • Provide guidance and clarification on a diverse complexity of issues and answer radiation safety program implementation questions from field radiological control personnel on matters related to HP field operations.
  • Respond to radiological emergencies and incidents on site. Participate in event investigations and make recommendations to all levels of management to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide periodic support to Programmatic field operations.
  • Contribute to the development and presentation of selected training courses in radiation safety (or related topics).
  • Streamline processes and advance radiation protection methods at the laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.4 level
  • Provide solutions to highly complex HP issues/problems where ambiguity exists around techniques and approaches that may require in-depth analysis of multiple tangible and intangible factors. Solution path is typically not known ahead of time, requiring independent judgment to accomplish objectives.
  • Act as the primary expert and routinely interact with professional colleagues, internal senior management, and sponsor organizations across and outside the Laboratory on advanced HP technical areas and projects/programs.
  • Act as RGD Safety Program Lead, RPFA Data Acceptance/Quality Assurance Program Lead, and a back-up to the internal Dosimetry Program Lead.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Physics, or Radiation Protection or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience in operational health physics engaged in the monitoring of personnel and work environments,ora related field with knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations and other consensus standards.
  • Significant experience with preparing technical reports or participating in and/or conducting radiation safety audits and inspections.
  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow through.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing projects, and meeting schedules.
  • Analytical, decision-making and problem-solving skills to effectively solve moderate to complex problems.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and explain technical or operational information.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.4 level
  • Master's or higher degree in Health Physics, or another closely related technical area.
  • Substantial experience in a facility engaged in the monitoring of personnel and work environments, or a related field with expert knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations and other consensus standards.
  • Substantial experience with preparing technical reports; participating in and/or conducting radiation safety audits and inspections.
  • Expertise in leading independent health physics work, reviewing new health and safety standards, and providing technical direction and/or leadership to health and safety staff on health physics-related matters.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Strong regulatory background achieved by serving in roles such as Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), Radiological Protection Manager (RPM), Radiological Control Manager (RCM).
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.
