Description: Job Summary:

The Health Systems Science Associate Professor at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine is responsible for facilitating learning, coordinating, developing, and teaching materials related to a broad health scholarship agenda that will increase health and health equity through systems innovation and redesign, specifically focused on patient safety, quality, value, social determinants of health, community and population health, and health policy throughout the four years of the curriculum. The faculty member is responsible for conducting student education, student counseling, scholarly activities, and service. The Health Systems Science Associate Professor will also fulfill administrative responsibilities including coordination with other content areas, generation of appropriate evaluation tools, student evaluation and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Engages in a mix of pedagogical and scholarly activities. Pedagogical and scholarly duties, expectations, and resources will be individually developed based on evolving faculty interests and skills as well as departmental priorities and needs.

  • Engages in scholarly activities in both clinical and community settings, including health services and health-related social sciences research; improvement and implementation research; health-related program and policy development and evaluation; and educational scholarship.

  • Serve as facilitators in small-group and team-based learning.

  • Contributes to the development and implementation of the educational curriculum for the school.

  • Works effectively as a team member to enhance and improve curriculum.

  • Collaborates across the biomedical, clinical, and health systems science departments to integrate and reinforce concepts throughout the four-year curriculum.

  • Interacts with, teaches and advises medical students in the schools integrated health systems sciences medical program.

  • Contributes to written progress reports and other documents as needed by the Department and the school.

  • Prepares and provides current and appropriate educational content for medical students.

  • Provides content expertise for specific educational and assessment materials delivered through a variety of student- centered pedagogies.

  • Prepares questions to assess student performance.

  • Serves on various committees within the school as needed.

  • Provides effective, active support as a student advisor and mentor.

  • Mentors students in the development of foundational knowledge and skillset.

  • Fosters student learning, development, and decision making in support of their goals, success, wellness, and needs.

  • Participates in the service and teaching missions of the Department, the school, and the Kaiser Permanente Health System while following regulatory requirements, Kaiser Permanente policies and procedures, the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine Faculty Handbook, and the Kaiser Permanente Principles of Responsibility.

    • Contributes to schools vision, initiatives, and milestone achievement while upholding school values.
    Basic Qualifications:
    Experience

    • Minimum (3) years of experience within a medical school with demonstrated outstanding teaching abilities, specific experiences in leading curriculum design, curriculum development, student and course evaluation, assessment, and curriculum mapping with respect to competencies and milestones.
    Education

    • PhD, MD or comparable degree.

    Additional Requirements:

    • Demonstrated scholarly experience in anthropology, design, economics, health services, law, management, medical education, psychology, public affairs, public health, sociology, statistics, or systems engineering.
    • Demonstrated outstanding teaching abilities and commitment to teaching.
    • Demonstrated strong collaboration and communication skills.
    • Demonstrated strong critical thinking, leadership, and organizational skills.
    • Demonstrated strong service in disadvantaged communities.

    • May not concurrently hold a postdoctoral appointment or participate in a training program.
    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Specific experiences in leading curriculum design and development, student and course evaluation, student assessment, and curriculum mapping with respect to competencies and milestones.
    • Knowledge and experience with various teaching methodologies such as problem-based learning, team-based learning, case-based learning, technology-assisted learning, and flipped classrooms.
    • Experience with accreditation of medical education programs.
