Summary
The position of Health Technician (HT) is established to provide support in a wide variety of basic clinical and intermediate level administrative functions. The incumbent must ensure compliance with VA regulations, T JC standards, and other regulatory agencies. It is anticipated the incumbent will require minimal guidance to acquire the necessary skills in the specific tasks, tests, and procedures to meet patient care and program needs specific to the assignment.

Work Schedule: 1900-0730: 6 12hr shifts and 1 8hr shift per pay period including Holidays/Weekends to meet organization needs.

Individual Occupational Requirement: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirement, you may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: 1) Organizes work, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements; determines short- or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization to accomplish goals; monitors progress and evaluates outcomes. 2) Uses knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive on the job experience to perform one's job; works with, understands, and evaluates technical information related to the job; advises others on technical issues.3) Knowledge of medical information and/or terminology related to the diagnoses, treatment, and prevention of human injuries and diseases.
Preferred Experience:
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.

Duties
Duties include, but not limited to:
- Coordinates with team members to assure patients are seen and treated in a timely manner.
- Secures patients' confidence and cooperation during procedures.
- Explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate.
- Assist medical staff with or performs diagnostic procedures used to diagnose medical conditions.
- Adjusts, adapts, and operates specialized equipment and accessories needed for difficult procedures.
- Responsible for all aspects of Appointment Management, including patient check-in and checkout.
- Obtains all key information needed and initiates administrative processing of orders in a timely manner.
- Obtains clinical information such as laboratory; radiological, and other reports from VISTA.
- Receives and directs patients, answers routine inquiries and makes referrals.
- Reinforces patient health and discharge education as directed by the Registered Nurse.
- Expected to perform a wide variety of clinical tasks, such as: Observe, report, and record general and specific physical and behavioral signs/symptoms of change in a patient's condition.
- Performs a range of diagnostic support duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

- Telemetry Certification / Ability to identify lethal rhythm
- Venipuncture Certification / recent experience with blood draws / ability to draw blood on critically ill patients
- Experience in obtaining EKGs
- Experience documenting care for mental health patients / State requirements for Baker Act patients
