What You Will Do

As a Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic in the Bureau of Solid Waste, you will perform routine maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a variety of equipment. Working under the direction of the Solid Waste Manager, you will operate diagnostic tools, perform safety inspections, and weld and fabricate as needed to ensure efficient operations.

Essential Duties
  • Perform major and minor routine maintenance services.
  • Operate diagnostic computer analyzer and other similar equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and other problems.
  • Perform Maryland Department of Transportation (DOT) and other safety inspections.
  • Safely operate air compressors, jacks, and other hydraulic or pneumatic tools.
  • Perform road call, towing, and rollback services.
  • Follow all established safety rules and regulations. Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment.
  • Ensure all work is complete and timely to support department goals. Evaluate feedback and procedures to improve efficiency.
  • Invite collaboration and seek learning opportunities. Proactively assist peers to create a supportive work environment.

You Might Be a Good Fit If

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
  • Three or more years of related experience
  • A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirement.
Licenses
  • Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with Tanker endorsement (or must obtain within 6 months of employment)
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) physical card
Certifications
  • Air Conditioning certification
Preferred
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification
  • Electric Diagnostics certification
  • Welding certification
Additional Information
  • May be required to work outside of standard hours.
  • May be identified as Essential Personnel during emergency situations.
Working Conditions

  • Work includes daily physical activity: lifting and carrying over 50lbs, climbing ladders, and related activities.
