The Prince George's County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Heavy Equipment Mechanic I/II position, grade A15/A16, in the OHM-Garage Management division.
\n
ABOUT THE POSITION
\n
This is an entry to full performance skilled mechanic work in the field of maintenance repair and service work whereby incumbents work on a variety of medium to heavy sized motorized diesel vehicles and equipment. The incumbent troubleshoots, diagnoses, effect repairs, performs preventative maintenance and builds and/or replaces parts or components.

What You'll Do:
\n
    \n
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, drive trains, computerized electronic ignition, fuel/emission systems, suspension and steering related components in both front and rear-wheel drive vehicles, air conditioning, heating and cooling systems, brake systems, and hydraulic systems;
  • \n
  • Enters pertinent work order data into fleet management software system (FA Suites);
  • \n
  • Changes, repairs and mounts tires of varying sizes for the departmental heavy equipment and heavy trucking fleet, both in the shop and in the field;
  • \n
  • Uses standard and/or specialized hand tools/equipment, to include electronic testing systems, hydraulic winches, and lifts, timing lights, voltmeters, and ammeters;
  • \n
  • Utilizes the most current computer-based diagnostic equipment and service manuals in the analysis of vehicle problems i.e., Texa-diesel diagnostic tool, Tech II (GMC), Pro-Link and refrigerant recovery machines to accurately diagnose vehicle faults;
  • \n
  • Conducts road repairs;
  • \n
  • Utilizes welding equipment, brake lathes, tire change/balance machines to complete vehicle repairs and maintenance;
  • \n
  • Works closely with the Garage Supervisor, Master Mechanic, and Supply Property Clerk to requisition repairs and stock parts;
  • \n
  • Test drives all vehicles as per current valid license to confirm proper completion of repairs;
  • \n
  • Participates as an \"essential\" employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities; and
  • \n
  • Performs other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.

Qualifications

What You Need:
\n

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.; plus
  • \n
  • One (1) year of experience/training in the mechanical field of servicing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on a variety of medium to heavy-duty motorized vehicles and equipment, which includes diesel and gasoline engines.

An equivalent combination of relevant training, education, and experience of the type required of this position, will be considered.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon selection, the candidates must:

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • \n
  • Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration report that reflects a satisfactory driving record.
  • \n
  • Within six (6) months of employment, obtain and maintain a CDL Class B license with air brake endorsement.
  • \n
  • Pass a physical examination and drug screen.
  • \n
  • Pass a pre-employmentdrug/alcohol screening.
  • \n
  • Wear required safety equipment, shoes, and uniforms while on duty.
  • \n
  • Be willing to participate asan \"essential\" employee in the Department's Snow and Ice ControlProgram andduring other emergency/special activities as assigned.

DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY:Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligibles, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
