Compensation and Benefits:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 7:00 am-05:00 pm

Primary Duties/Brief Description of Work:

The Heavy Equipment Operator will be assigned to the Residential section of Solid Waste and will primarily operate an automated collection vehicle as well as a knuckle boom collection vehicle. The position requires a collection of 1,000 automated containers per day. The employee in this position can be expected to work on or with other crews in the residential collection section which could consist of rear packer collection of yard waste and bulk items. This position could also be required to work during emergency situations such as snow program, tornado, and/or other weather related emergencies with little or no notice.

The successful candidate should have the ability to find locations independently using a street guide/city map; use two-way radios; communicate both orally and in written form; and complete daily survey forms and vehicle inspection forms. They will also be expected to work closely with all solid waste supervisors; have a willingness to assist wherever needed; and work independently under limited supervision.

The employee must possess good customer service skills; a positive attitude and the ability to work well in a team concept. The physical duties include: stooping, standing, bending, kneeling, walking, sitting for long periods, hand and eye coordination, climbing, shoveling, and heavy lifting up to 50 lbs on a consistent basis. Work is performed outside in all weather conditions and may require a flexible schedule with little or no notice that may include weekends and holidays.

This employee must maintain a reliable means of contact (i.e. home telephone or cell phone) for call back duties or emergency situations. This employee must also maintain a CDL Class B unrestricted driver's license. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. The job is NON-EXEMPT under FLSA.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma/GED with 1-3 years experience experience operating CDL-related vehicles
  • Or No High School Diploma/GED with 5-7 years of experience operating CDL related vehicles
  • Class A or B Commercial Driver's License
