Position Description

This posting will be used to fill Permanent, Full-time, Represented, Safety Sensitive positions within the Bureau of Highways and Utilities in the Department of Public Works. This position can be assigned to any location within the Bureau of Highways and Utilities.
\n
This is full journeyman level work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, trucks and related gasoline and diesel powered equipment.
\n
NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
\n
Work involves responsibility for the performance of skilled tasks in the mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance of automotive equipment including police vehicles, passenger cars, trucks, tractors, mowers, and/or other standard and specialized equipment.
\n
Assignments are received in the form of work orders, and employees work under general supervision, using independent judgment in diagnosis and repair. Work is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion.
\n
Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
\n

\n
Tunes engines, gaps and replaces spark plugs, sets timing; replaces cylinder heads and gaskets; grinds valves; makes service calls.
\n
Repairs and overhauls transmissions, differentials, front and rear end assemblies; turns brakes rotors and drums.
\n
Utilizes computerized diagnostic equipment in determining service requirements.
\n
Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts including brakes, cooling, ignition, electrical, and fuel systems, mufflers, and exhaust pipes.
\n
Repairs and overhauls generators, carburetors and clutch assemblies; replaces broken axles and springs; replaces hydraulic lines and cylinders.
\n
Repairs and overhauls air compressors, portable pumps, chain saws, lawn mowers, and other specialized equipment; may do limited welding and blacksmithing work related to repairs.
\n
Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
\n
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, diagnostic instruments, and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment.
\n
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
\n
Skill in the use and operation of diagnostic equipment, tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
\n
Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment.
\n
Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
\n
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
\n
Ability to interpret and work from service manuals, specifications and diagrams.
\n
Minimum Qualifications
\n
Graduation from high or vocational school; considerable experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment at the full performance level; automotive service excellence (ASE) certification as determined by area of assignment; a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license without air brake restriction.
\n
NOTE: Candidates who do not possess a class B CDL without air brake restriction must obtain this license within six (6) months of employment. Therefore, for applicants who do not possess a CDL, they must at least possess a non-provisional Class C driver's license at the time of application. Candidates must possess the ability to acquire a medical certificate as mandated by Federal Laws in order to obtain a CDL Learner's Permit.

NOTE: Candidates who do not possess ASE certification must obtain this li within six (6) months of employment. T

NOTE: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol Testing.

NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.

1.) A valid Class \"A\" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without air brake restriction.
