Nurse Practitioner MS, Hematology, 40 hours/ Days

OVERVIEW:

  • The mission of the Division of Hematology at Brigham & Women's Hospital (BWH) is to provide advance clinical care, teaching, and research in hematology. As part of the multi-disciplinary Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center, we are one of the largest centers for adults with blood and bone marrow diseases in the world with more than 20 clinical specialists, nurse practitioners and social workers, providing comprehensive, personalized care to our patients.
  • Under the direction and guidance of the Nursing Director, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) functions within an ambulatory setting as a clinical team member delivering care to a panel of patients for whom s/he has responsibility for the planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of care.
  • In collaboration with physicians of the Division, the NP provides patient care and management to select patients with a variety of hematologic diagnoses such as anemias of various etiologies, myeloproliferative and myelodysplastic syndromes, bleeding and clotting disorders, platelet disorders, anticoagulation issues, etc.
  • May be asked to participate in clinical and translation research projects.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works primarily at BWH Main campus and Faulkner locations as well as DFCI Longwood.
  • Maintains a 5-day, 8-hour per week work schedule (potential option for hybrid) which includes five 4-hour outpatient clinic sessions.
  • Promotes a collaborative relationship and effort between the medical staff, professional nursing staff and clinic staff toward continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources.
  • Serves as a role model for professional nursing practice.
  • Provides cross-coverage for other NPs within the Division as needed.
  • Provides direct care to select patient populations (i.e., anemias of various etiologies, platelet and white blood cell disorders, bleeding and thrombotic disorders).
  • Serves as a resource to staff in area(s) of expertise.
  • Serves on appropriate departmental and interdepartmental committees.
  • Participates in the development of formal and informal educational programs for nursing staff.
  • Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Supports and participates in clinical research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice.
  • Evaluates own practice and program effectiveness.
  • Utilizes patient portal messaging as one of the ways to communicate with patients.
  • Communicates lab / testing results and plans of care with patients.
  • Prescribes and refills appropriate medications when indicated.


Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) (or) DNP (or) PhD Degree in Nursing required. Satisfactory completion of an approved formal education program which has as its objective the preparation of professional nurses to practice as nurse practitioner.
  2. Valid prescriptive authority from both MA DPH and Federal DEA required.
  3. Require FNP or AGNP certification.
  4. Minimum 3 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in ambulatory healthcare and management of patients with chronic diseases required.
  5. Hematology experience strongly preferred.
  6. Experience in clinical and translational research study management preferred.


SKILLS:

  • Ability to work collaboratively and function as an effective member of the health care team in a very busy and diverse clinical environment.
  • Ability to serve as a resource for medical, nursing and support staff regarding hematology patient care.
  • Ability to work with a variety of information systems and databases, such as: MS Word, PowerPoint, EPIC.
