Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a self-motivated person who is eager to learn and become part of our newly created Office of Hemp Enforcement team in the Division of Animal and Food Industry Services. The position will work to ensure regulated hemp products in the Commonwealth of Virginia comply with all laws and regulations. Duties include providing guidance, direction and technical expertise related to regulated hemp products in accordance with applicable laws and regulations; conducting compliance activities to ensure rigorous enforcement of the requirements; evaluating and reporting on hemp products at regulated establishments to include labeling and packaging requirements; reviewing inspection reports; and supervising the daily activities of the Hemp Compliance and Technical Specialists to ensure that evidence collected during hemp product inspections is evaluated properly and consistently for compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth's telework policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of inspection, investigation, enforcement practices, food safety, dietary supplement, edible hemp products and inhalable hemp product labeling. Demonstrated ability to make independent technical judgment and decisions on points of hemp product enforcement and related issues and to provide guidance to, and review the work of, hemp enforcement inspectors and technical specialists. Interpret and apply complex regulations, policies and procedures, gather information, and to serve as technical subject matter expert. Provide recommend procedural changes and to accommodate new or variable processes or procedures when needed. Plan and organize work and supervise the work of others to include training, evaluation and other human resource-related functions. Ability to understand and communicate scientific principles. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate, both written and orally and to provide exceptional customer service. Work both independently and in a team environment, self-motivated, and make sound analytical decisions. Successfully interact with co-workers, the public, the hemp industry and other regulatory agencies. Proficiency with standard computer applications.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of food science, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, environmental health, compliance, law enforcement or a related field.
