This position requires a valid Class (E) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
\n
    \n
  • three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
  • \n
  • any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
  • \n
  • a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and
  • \n
  • a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years
  • \n

Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.
\n
Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
\n
Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment.
\n
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
\n
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
\n
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques. Skilled in: operating a variety of hand and power tools; operate and perform pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating. Ability to: read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms; maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures; communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions; develop and maintain effective working relationships with others; lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds; stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis; work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic; stand for a extended period of time; operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.

OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS: Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies and be \"on-call\" (24-hour duty) when necessary. A Class \"E\" driver's license is required at time of hire. A CDL Class B License Instruction Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment. While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
